Disa wins contract for clinical deployment of Automated Visual Acuity Test at major Singapore hospital

Digital Life Line (DLL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Disa, has been awarded a letter of award from one of Singapore' s major public hospitals. The group has also signed the letter of acknowledgement and the relevant contract for the clinical deployment of its automated visual acuity test (AVAT) devices at a hospital ophthalmology clinic in Singapore from Feb 3 this year to Feb 2, 2026.

Under the contract, DLL will supply AVAT on a leasing basis, charging a fixed monthly rental fee along with a per-test fee, creating a hybrid pricing structure. This approach ensures a steady revenue stream through the fixed rental while allowing for scalability based on usage

This milestone follows a two-month-long pilot study at the Department of Ophthalmology of a public hospital that assesses the accuracy, usability and patient satisfaction of AVAT, and the AVAT is the result of several years of dedicated research and development work by the Department of Ophthalmology at the National University Hospital and Centre for Innovation and Precision Eye Health at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.

This marks the first commercial deployment of AVAT in Singapore, and the group received Class A Medical Device Registration for AVAT from the Health Science Authority (HSA) Singapore in August 2023.

Eddie Chng, managing director and CEO, DLL, says: &ldquo We are truly honoured to be given the opportunity to deploy AVAT in Singapore. Due to the convenience and reduced manpower needs, self-administered kiosks are becoming common, ranging from supermarket self-checkout machines to home-based blood pressure monitoring devices.&rdquo

&ldquo We know that loss of eyesight is irreversible, so the widespread deployment of devices like AVAT in the community is key not only for early diagnosis and intervention, but also to alleviate the workload at tertiary hospitals facing severe manpower shortages,&rdquo concludes Chng.

Disa subsidiary signs licensing agreement with NUH and NUS to commercialise cataract diagnostic device

Digital Life Line Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of DiSa Digital Safety Pte. Ltd., has signed a tri-party licensing agreement with the National University Hospital (Singapore) or NUH and the National University of Singapore (NUS) to commercialise the company&rsquo s mobile imaging device for anterior segment (MIDAS) on Jan 7. DiSa Digital Safety Pte. Ltd. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Catalist-listed Disa Limited.

In its business update on Oct 25, 2024, Disa said that it was focusing on its eye screening devices, which included the development of MIDAS, which could detect eye pathologies. MIDAS, a portable smartphone slit lamp imaging device, is registered with the Health Science Authority of Singapore (HSA) and is designed for cataract screening in primary care settings. The device is meant to be used by patients, nurses, primary care physicians such as general practitioners, polyclinic doctors and emergency physicians.

According to Disa, chronic eye conditions such as cataracts are becoming increasingly common among Singapore&rsquo s rapidly ageing population. Referring to a study conducted by the Singapore National Eye Centre, over 80% of people aged 60 and above in Singapore have some form of cataract.

&ldquo We are honoured to be given another opportunity to work with NUH and NUS to commercialise MIDAS in Singapore and hopefully, regionally in the near future,&rdquo says Eddie Chng, managing director and CEO of Disa and Digital Life Line.

&ldquo With our portable artificial intelligence-powered cataract screening device, we are bringing advanced eye care directly to the community,&rdquo he adds. &ldquo Our in-house developed artificial intelligence (AI)-algorithms can eliminate the need for trained staff to identify the best image and process the cataract grading parameters within 10 seconds. By harnessing intelligent triaging based on an established cataract grading system, we aim to ensure that each referral is both timely and accurate.&rdquo

Eddie Chng, CEO, says " Just look at me. I' m not a doctor by training, but I can hire people with the expertise I need. As management, you rely on your people. That' s why you must ensure you have the right ones. I' ve learned that over the years in my many businesses."

Looking ahead, he points to the need for financial prudence. While firms have had access to cheaper funding in the past 10 to 15 years because of low interest rates, that is no longer the case, he says.

" Make sure you leave yourself enough of a financial runway so that you have options. If you' re careful in managing your capital, overheads and spending, you have more choices, including to capitalise on opportunities. Apart from that, be laser-focused on the industry and markets that you want to make progress in, and you will give yourself the best chance of success."
