Sembcorp, Sarawak Energy partner Prysmian to supply Singapore with green energy
This comes after the Republic raised its low-carbon electricity import target to 6 GW by 2035, up from an initial target of 4 GW set in 2021

[SINGAPORE] The subsidiaries of Sembcorp Industries : U96 -0.81% and state-owned utilities company Sarawak Energy have entered an agreement with Prysmian for a hydropower project that could supply Singapore with 1 gigawatt (GW) of green electricity from the Malaysian state, Sembcorp said in a bourse filing on Wednesday (Mar 19).

The preferred supplier agreement is between Sembcorp Utilities, Sarawak Energy Services and Prysmian, an Italian subsea cable maker that produces high-voltage submarine and underground cable systems.

It also involves technical partner SP PowerInterconnect, a subsidiary of Singapore&rsquo s state-owned utilities company SP Group that specialises in the development and operation of cross-border electricity interconnectors.

Sembcorp said that the parties will work on optimising the design, installation methodology and protection requirements for a subsea interconnector cable.

The potential import of an estimated 1 GW of green electricity from Sarawak to Singapore is subject to regulatory approvals.

Last September, Singapore raised its low-carbon electricity import target to 6 GW by 2035, up from an initial target of 4 GW set in 2021.

Sembcorp completes sale of waste management subsidiary for a consideration of $405 mil

Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp) has completed the sale of the entire shareholding in its subsidiary Sembcorp Environment (SembEnviro) to SBT Investment 2, a wholly-owned subsidiary of TBS Energi Utama (TBS).

This follows the Nov 8, 2024 news when Sembcorp first announced its intention to sell 100% of its shares in SembEnviro for a total consideration of $405 million.

Then, it represented a 43% premium over the book value and net asset value of SembEnviro and its subsidiaries (SembEnviro group) as at June 30, 2024, after taking into account the estimated pre-completion dividend to be distributed from SembEnviro group.

TBS manages a waste management portfolio in Singapore and Indonesia, and is listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange. In Singapore, it owns and operates Asia Medical Enviro Services which specialises in biohazardous and medical waste treatment services.

TBS says that it is working to establish a regionally integrated waste management platform with presence in Indonesia and Singapore across medical, industrial and domestic waste management, fostering sustainable waste solutions for both cities and industries.

Sembcorp says that it will provide up to 18 months of support services to SembEnviro and its subsidiaries and will also permit limited use of the SembEnviro name and its trademarks during the transitional period.

Anyone still rmb the "Temasek to raise stake in Keppel to 51%" thingy 6 years ago? That offer was 25% above Keppel's last trade price then. But offer aborted following year in midst of COVID. May we be in for something similar, but this time with Sembcorp.

There is a good smell that this recent article as quoted at NUS may bide well for SCI and Keppel. SCI will be likely. That's why SCI announced the strategic review of the business two days ago. Did you know about Mr Ang who is a chairman of investment board of GIC? He was ex-chairman of SCI for many years until 2023. There can be a speculation that as long as SCI can be a candidate to suit GIC's mandate and objective with its international business expansion and sustainable renewable energy, SCI's renewables energy assets may be sold to GIC otherwise GIC may take SCI private on joint basis with Temasek Holdings. This maybe be set on path for nuclear reactor industry planned under study by SG government. Just a wild guess. Is this a golden opportunity to smell the roses rather than the rats?

[SINGAPORE] The clean energy transition has opened up investment opportunities in grid development and expansion, said Emily Chew, head of sustainability at Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC. With the rapid expansion of power generation capacity from renewable sources, it is inevitable that grid development will be the next phase in the energy transition journey for renewable power generation to be successful, said Chew, who was speaking at a recent conference held by the National University of Singapore?s (NUS) Sustainable and Green Finance Institute. ?There?s a lot of focus right now in the investment management industry on opportunities in effective grid management and build out,? she added. ?It?s a precursor to the future success of renewable deployment and clean energy transition? And the spike that we see in (energy) growth demand is going to help build out and make that next phase happen, possibly accelerate.?

Good comments. Yesterday's news annoucement about 173 projects worth $13 billion has no impact on SCI stock price because several Singapore firms including SCI invest in 8 projects out of 173 projects. That is a very small matter of attention. Another thing is that shortists or inexperienced investors may be the cause today as their concerns are too big about cancellation of gas imports from Indonesia. In fact, SCI has no shortage of gas supply to Singapore until 2026 when the gas demand is expected to be increased so SCI is preparing for gas procurement. Higher demand, higher gas price

The Vietnam issue is a very small contract - 50mwp (50% share of 100mwp project). Even if write off, should only have marginal impact. And this news came out yesterday lunch time and SCI' s price in fact rose after the news came out. This morning' s decline is due to the cancellation of the deal to buy piped natural gas from Indonesia. But then when this deal was announced, i do not recall SCI spiking up by 25 cents? And SCI has announced this should not have any material impact, on energy costs and supply of sufficient natural gas. They will source for another contract. Still have enough time since the supply was to commence only in 2026. Basically shortists taking advantage of this news. Nothing fundamentally has changed.

Sembcorp is in a sweet spot. Gas biz can carry them while they grab renewable energy biz.
& latest is our govt is exploring nuclear energy.
So who best to do it than Sembcorp or Keppel or both.
