Wilmar' s Q3 earnings up 6% to US$568.7m

FRI, OCT 29, 2021 - 7:06 PM

AGRIBUSINESS Wilmar International' s net profit for the quarter to September rose 6 per cent to US$568.7 million. Its core net profit jumped by 15 per cent to a record high US$576.4 million since it listed on Singapore Exchange mainboard.

The bottom line, hit by investment securities losses, diluted the core net profit, said the company in a regulatory filing on Friday (Oct 29).

The company said its results improved as the Feed and Industrial Products, and Plantation and Sugar Milling segments turned in better performances.

Boosted by good manufacturing margins and stronger demand for downstream tropical-oils products, sales of tropical oil products (under the Feed and Industrial Products segment) rose by 4.9 per cent to 5.9 million metric tonnes in the quarter, but weaker soybean crushing and sugar merchandising activities tamped down on overall sales for the segment by 17.5 per cent to 13.6 million metric tonnes.

The company said due to firmer palm oil and sugar prices, the Plantation and Sugar Milling segment was able to perform well, but it also noted that higher raw material cost continued to weigh on Food Products segment, as the time lag in selling-price adjustments affected overall margins. Driven by demand for flour and rice products, 7.5 million metric tonnes in total volume were sold by Food Products, up marginally by 0.7 per cent.

Consumer products sales in China were lower, due partly to the recovery of the food-and-beverage segment as the pandemic was brought under control there, more people started dining out, so the sales volumes for medium pack and bulk products rose by 5.5 per cent to 5.2 million metric tonnes. The sales volume for consumer products fell by 9.1 per cent to 2.2 million metric tonnes.

The company' s share of results from the joint ventures and associates in China, India and South-east Asia was also lower during the quarter.

The core net profit and total earnings both improved by 15.1 per cent year on year, with the core at US$1.31 billion and net profit at US$1.32 billion for the first 9 months of FY 2021.

The company said it expects satisfactory performance for the rest of the financial year.

The counter traded down S$0.04 at S$4.32 on Friday (Oct 29), before the quarter' s results were published. .

Segment analysis:
Tropical oils &ndash Revenue fell 22% to US$4.15b on weaker CPO prices and sales volume (-2%). This, coupled with thinner refining margins led to a 46% slump in pretax profits to US$105.1m.

Oilseeds and grains &ndash Top line grew 5% to US$4.85b, driven by a 25% growth in sales volume to 8.01m mt. Pretax profits surged 39% to US$243.6m on improved margins for soybean crushing and consumer products in China.

Sugar &ndash Revenue dipped 1% to US$1.38b despite a strong sales volume of 4.67m mt (+34%) amid poor sugar prices. Pretax profits dived 31% to US$108.7m, undermined by a 22% depreciation in AUD, as well as weaker performance of merchandising and manufacturing business.

Bottom line was further hit by mark-to-market losses on investment securities (US$61.8m) and FX (US$47.1m) and losses from sugar associates in India.

Moving forward, management remains optimistic for FY15 as they view the satisfactory performance of the oilseeds and grains segment as sustainable, and expects the tropical oil business to improve on the group&rsquo s biodiesel mandate in Indonesia and firmer CPO prices. The sugar segment is also expected to recover given the recent surge in sugar prices.

Wilmar is currently trading at 11.7x FY15e P/E and 0.9x P/B.

3Q15 results missed, with core net profit down 16.5% y/y to US$359b on weaker revenue of US$10.6b (-7.6%). Topline was mainly dragged by the tropical oils business (-22%), which suffered from lower CPO prices and sales volume, but partially offset by stronger performance from the oilseeds and grains division (+5%). Overall EBITDA margin expanded 0.7ppt to 5.4%, led by wider margin in the oilseeds and grains division. Bottom line was hit by mark-to-market losses on investment securities, FX on inter-Co. loans and losses from sugar associates in India. Net gearing improved to 0.74x (FY14: 0.78x). NAV/share at US$2.35.

Majority shareholder ADM sparks rally
Majority shareholder NYSE-listed Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) purchased shares in the market yesterday, potentially sparking Wilmar' s 8.9% climb in share price yesterday.

In response to a SGX trading query, the group disclosed that the 18.31% shareholder bought an approximate 22% worth of total volume yesterday, or ~5.2m shares, and raises its stake to 18.39%.

The stake increase may perhaps provide assurance to other shareholders and may also signal a share price support at the $3.00 region.

In the near term, market watchers will be anticipating Wilmar' s 3Q15 results to be released on 11 Nov after trading hours. The street expects earnings per share of US$0.045 (3Q14: US$0.066, 2Q15: US$0.032).

Bloomberg consensus currently has 14 Buy, 5 Sell and 2 Hold ratings on Wilmar, with a 12-month TP of $3.31.

Wilmar' s share price gain may be due to more than ADM

Source:  TheEdge Markets     |     Publish date:  Wed, 21 Oct 2015, 10:59 AM     |       > > Read article in News website

SINGAPORE (Oct 21): Wilmar International' s 8.9% gain in Tuesday trade could be down to more than just Archer Daniels Midland' s involvement in the market, OCBC analyst Carey Wong says.

" Something else could be brewing," he said, noting that ADM' s purchase of 22% of Tuesday' s trading volume as announced by Wilmar amounts to less than 1% of the firm' s outstanding shares.

Wilmar' s shares have gained around 25% since late September, with some share buybacks from the company but few other cues to drive trading.
