IPOs nowadays are all overhyped and overpriced by all the parties involved acting in concert.
Like an exciting korean drama.  But upon peeling away all the hype, it' s clearly the same fairytale of the Emperor' s New Clothes.

Can' t agree more, Pirateboy. After IPOs, many of these once low-key, honest, hardworking, thrifty towkays suddenly felt that because they are now major shareholders and CEOs of listed companies, their image needed revamps ...  luxury cars, biz/first-class air-tickets, expensive offices, high entertainment expenses, etc. After the second year of listing, reality sets in. Earnings up but share price goes down and trading volume non-existent. By the third year, these towkays lost interest in their listcos and started to pursue other interests. Delisting is extremely difficult because one must buy up all the minority shareholders at a premium and the fees payable for delisting is much more than listing.

for smaller companies, the major shareholders are so taken in by the sponsor and banks that they will listen to them. The CEO/founder is usually someone who is just focussed on the business. They don' t know that once the company acquires a bad name, the name sticks. People who lose money or barely break even at IPO stage, the word goes around and its tainted forever with no volume. there are so many companies in SGX with no volume.

For retail investors, the blanket principle to adopt is to avoid all IPOs at all costs.

Nowadays, the underwriters, SSs, BoDs, Executives, etc, basically all parties that have a hand insde the candy box will hype up the potential of the IPO company by spending tons of money on road-shows, advertising, and whatever other tricks available. Then they get Cornerstone investors who gets a sweet deal (whatever that may be, because why would any BB take a stake without a sure-win deal).  With these in place, they then set the IPO price at the " highest end of expectations" --- this phrase is also dubious because who sets the range of expectations in the first place?

Then they allot 90+++% to a few BBs, Cornerstone, Private Placement or whatever ingenious high-sounding names they can think of.

And just a tiny percentage (nowadays from 1% to 5%) to general public/retailers to subscribe. The purpose is as clear as day.  They want tons of retail fishes to subscribe, thus creating hype and generate a huge media publicty that the public tranche has been hundreds of times oversubscribe.  The aim is for the hype to cause the price to skyrocket on Listing Day as retail investors/punters/speculators/daytraders pile in en masse to buy since most would not have been alloted any shares.  The result is an overvalued stock chased up to a hyper-overvalued price.

And notice that throughout, no one even bothers about fundamentals.
In the end, BBs exit at high and retailers are left holding the bag that gets lighter and emptier by the day.  And then becomes weeks, months and years.

I read the BT article. You will find more activists in companies that are in some sort of trouble. There is almost absolutely nothing minority investors can do to stop the rot in listed companies that are heading the wrong paths. There is also no point trying to do anything when the structure is against minority shareholders. If you can' t win the fight, you try to stay away from the fight. That' s why most young people are not keen in stocks listed in SGX.

I used to dowload almost all IPO prospectus and go through substantial portions of it. My thinking is that alot of info is given in the IPO prospectus. The section on risks allows one to understand what can go wrong with the company. By doing so, I can revisit these companies years down the road. I think we all know the answer. Don' t bother.

An excellent Businesstimes article for whoever owns any  stock at all.    A new dawn has arrived for small retail investors.

Small retail investors are no longer just coffeeshop uncles & aunties of past decades.
Nowadays, there are tons of young, savvy investors who research and study deeply into markets and the stocks they buy.
Even the uncles and aunties investors nowadays have decades of experience in the private sector witnessing how the real  world of money works.

Retail investors need to unite as one to ensure  BB sharks  don' t gobble us up like anchovies then laugh all the way to their banks.  Whenever we notice BBs setting up baits to hook retail investors, we must not only swim away, but also Warn All Other Retailers Of The Danger.

Greedy BBs will only become extinct when when retailers no longer get hooked.

agree. what can you say if 100+x oversubscribed at IPO price but 0 will bid for 4 cents more?

first trading day is a time to celebrate and share some goodies with new shareholders, not for owners to sit alone patting their own heads for leaving no meat.

anyway, agreed, don' t even bother.

There' s a famous saying : Once Bitten Twice Shy.
But SG investors have been bitten so many times that most of them have finally wised up to the tricks played by the BBs.
Nowadays, when BBs throw baits to catch retail fish, only a few will take the bite.
The smart retailers will swim away to find cheaper lunch.

Looking at its performance today, it has only one way to go ----- DOWN.
Bullish investors are clearly already tired and jumping ship before it sinks.
And shortists will take over command and bring it down the watery grave to keep the Titanic company.
