Review &ndash Quarter ended 31 March 2017

Turnover & Profitability

The Group&rsquo s Investment Division continued its growth momentum in the quarter ended 31 March 2017 (Q1-FY17) with revenue, including certain project related fees recognized from this quarter, increasing by 29% to S$7.2 million compared to S$5.6 million in the previous corresponding quarter ended 31 March 2016. Continuing its focus on higher margin items as well as due to the effect of reduction in supplies of certain mobility products from Q2-FY16, the Lifestyle Division&rsquo s revenues declined to S$29.7 million for the latest quarter compared to S$74.7 million previously. Overall Group turnover reduced by 54% to S$36.9 million for Q1-FY17 as against S$80.3 million in the previous corresponding quarter.

Notwithstanding the revenue reduction, the Lifestyle Division was able to grow its gross profit in the quarter from a pick-up in certain beauty and wellness products. Combined with the Investment Division&rsquo s growth, Group gross profit expanded to S$10.5 million for the quarter as compared to S$8.5 million in the previous corresponding quarter. Group gross profit margin accordingly increased to 28.6% for the quarter as against 10.5% in the comparative quarter.

Operating profit rose by 84% to S$4.4 million during the quarter compared to S$2.4 million in the previous corresponding quarter.

Notwithstanding a higher valuation loss taken on the investment properties in Australia and share of associate&rsquo s pre-sale operating costs for the retirement living joint venture in the current period, the Group&rsquo s net profit before tax was S$2.0 million for Q1-FY17 compared to S$1.0 million reported for the previous corresponding quarter, an increase of 91%.

Is Thakral&rsquo s depressed stock a good buy?
By:
Jude Chan
SINGAPORE (April 7): When Thakral Corp was listed in 1995, it was valued at some US$400 million ($560 million). But its market value has shrivelled significantly since then.

On April 3, the stock closed at 26 cents, putting the value of the whole company at just $34 million.

The company is moving out of the increasingly cut-throat business of distributing electrical and electronic goods such as televisions and cameras in China, and turning to delivering beauty and wellness products to the Middle Kingdom&rsquo s burgeoning consumer market.

With its new products requiring less space, Thakral is looking at monetising some of its warehouses in Hong Kong.

&ldquo We are looking at the right structure to get this thing done,&rdquo Thakral CEO Inderbethal Singh Thakral tells The Edge Singapore.

As at Dec 31, it had $40.14 million &mdash or 30.6 cents a share &mdash worth of warehouse space on its books classified as assets held for sale. That is about 18% more than Thakral&rsquo s current market capitalisation.

While it may be some time before Thakral&rsquo s distribution and property businesses become consistent drivers of its bottom line, the monetisation of some of its assets could get its stock price moving.

At current levels, the stock is trading at more than 80 times earnings and at a 64.7% discount to its net asset value. As at Dec 31, Thakral&rsquo s NAV stood at $96.5 million, or 73.72 cents a share.

Review &ndash Year ended 31 December 2016 The Group&rsquo s Investment Division reported revenue of S$36.2 million for the financial year ended 31 December 2016 (&ldquo FY2016&rdquo ), a growth of 51% over the previous financial year. The increased revenue in the last quarter was a result of the recognition of returns from ongoing projects and also the completion of the Vida project in Australia. With the Lifestyle Division&rsquo s sales reducing by about 42% to S$178.6 million for the year due to its focus on higher-margin business together with the curtailment of supply of certain mobility products effectively from Q3-FY16, overall Group turnover declined to S$214.9 million in the year from S$331.3 million in the prior year. Group gross profit for FY2016, including the income realized upon the completion of the Vida project in Australia, thus improved by 37% to S$45.2 million compared to S$33.1 million earned in the previous year. This, combined with the better margins by both the Investment Division and Lifestyle division, saw group gross profit margin rise to 21% for the year compared to 10% in the previous financial year. The Group earned a net profit before tax of S$4.2 million for FY2016 which included a net impairment charge of S$7.3 million comprised of an S$8.4 million charge against the GLNG properties in Australia and a gain of S$1.0 million for the Group&rsquo s Hong Kong and China investment properties. In the previous year, the Group had recognized an unrealized valuation gain of S$9.9 million mainly on its warehouse properties in Hong Kong. The Group is continuing its efforts to maximize and realize value from the Hong Kong warehouse properties. Operating profit grew significantly to S$17.7 million for the year compared to S$2.6 million for the previous financial year.......................

Net Asset Value per share as at 31 December 2016 was 73.72 cents, compared to 73.57 cents as at 31 December 2015.
