From DBSV analyst report:

" HLF an attractive takeover target. We believe that HLF is an extremely attractive takeover target for foreign banks that are keen to expand their reach in the Singapore SME lending space, for the following reasons (1) its strong asset quality, (2) its niche lending expertise in property-related loans, (3) its extensive branch network.

Further 43% upside potential over last close on M& A possibility. We believe any takeover for fincos should be launched at above 1x P/BV, providing > 43% upside over last close of S$2.70 and an additional 21% upside over our TP of S$3.20."

Times are difficult, so MAS relaxes rules, this pave the way for HLF possible M& A by .....say HLB (Malaysia)...... Hong Leong Group is experiencing a change of leadership, 2nd geration taking over, fuelling the possibility of a change in group biz structure...... these IMHO are the reason HLF  is running......... dyodd

HLF is giving 4 cents dividend for first half year result, versa last year 2 cents !
Ecpected year end dividend to be 8 to 10 cents versa last year 6 cents.
Total dividend ecpected should be around 5% this year which is not too bad for a safe stock like HLF.

NAV gone up to 3.85 versa yesterday price 2.62 !

Hong Leong Finance' s Q1 profit rises

Wednesday, April 26, 2017 - 22:00

HONG Leong Finance' s profit for the first quarter ended March 31, 2017, rose 13.2 per cent year on year to S$16.46 million.

This was partly due to a decline in staff costs and a reduction in other operating expenses.

Total interest income/hiring charges clocked S$72.1 million, down 11.5 per cent year on year, in line with lower interest on loans as well as other interest income.

Annualised earnings per share came to 14.83 Singapore cents, up from 13.11 cents a year ago.

What a turnaround!

Expect > 40% growth in NPAT. We estimate 44% growth in HLF&rsquo s
NPAT, from a multi-year low of S$53.0m in FY2016, riding on higher
net interest margin (NIM) due to lower cost of funds. HLF faced higher
cost of funds in FY2016 due to expensive deposits collected amidst fixed
deposits competition towards end 2015.

3 more rate hikes in 2017! The 3 banks have already rallied on expectations of expansion in NIMs. Wouldn' t HL Finance be a bigger beneficiary since 90% of its total  income is derived from interest income?

Imo,  HLF is  a better proxy for the impending rate hike than the banks. So far, it has flown under the radar of many investors. This is  a laggard  as it is only trading at around PB ratio of 0.59.

Why DBS is starting this finco with a &lsquo buy&rsquo

By:

SINGAPORE (April 5): DBS is starting coverage on Hong Leong Finance with a &ldquo buy&rdquo and target price of $3.20 on possibility of an M& A while new opportunities abound.

The rule relaxation by MAS on finance companies in mid Feb opens new opportunities for Singapore fincos, says DBS.

This included the lifting of limits on uncollateralised loans as a percentage of capital funds from 10% to 25% and the liberalisation of its existing policy to allow a foreign takeover.

&ldquo Hong Leong Finance (HLF), the largest of the three fincos in Singapore, is poised to benefit, in our view,&rdquo says analyst Lim Sue Lin in a Wednesday report.

With over 50 years of lending experience to Small-Medium Enterprises, Hong Leong Finance dominates the finco lending space, accounting for more than 75% of the total loans of local fincos.

Hong Leong Finance also has the biggest branch network among the three fincos with 28 branches and 10 SME centres across Singapore.

&ldquo Hong Leong Finance&rsquo s strength lies in property-related financing (78% of loans) and hire purchase and block financing (16% of total loans),&rdquo says Lim.

DBS estimates 44% growth in Hong Leong Finance&rsquo s NPAT for FY17, from a multi-year low of $53 million in FY16, riding on higher net interest margin (NIM) due to lower cost of funds.

&ldquo Our TP of $3.20 offers 18% upside potential, based on Hong Leong Finance&rsquo s competitive strengths and growth prospects vs its finco peers,&rdquo says Lim.

Under an M& A scenario, Lim expects Hong Leong Finance to attract at least 1x BV as current shareholders are unlikely to sell out at lower valuations given the prospects of the business under this new regulatory regime. This provides a minimum upside of more than 43% over last close of $2.70.

Shares of Hong Leong Finance are up 10 cents at $2.80.
