Corporate raider asks for seats at NatSteel

Published: 12:00am, 6 Dec, 2002

Corporate raider Oei Hong Leong has changed tack in his struggle for Singapore' s NatSteel, demanding a shareholders' vote on distributing the steel-millers' vast cash pile and three seats on the company' s board.
NatSteel, which holds funds of S$598 million (about HK$2.63 billion) from two asset sales, said yesterday that it was considering the two requests.
Indonesian-born Mr Oei is NatSteel' s largest shareholder after buying 29.25 per cent of the company in the open market for S$220 million. He has been locked in a struggle with state-backed investment consortium 98 Holdings for control of the group.
98 Holdings, which holds 26.7 per cent of NatSteel, has tabled a general bid for the company at S$2.03 a share, valuing it at S$737 million. The deadline for acceptances for the offer was extended last Wednesday and now expires on Monday.

The rough-and-tumble showdown has taken centre-stage in the city-state, which is not often the scene for contested takeovers.
98 Holdings is backed by high-profile hotelier Ong Beng Seng, NatSteel' s management and state investment unit Temasek.
By contrast, Mr Oei - a scion of Indonesia' s powerful Widjaja family - is a relative outsider in Singapore. He has yet to make a general offer for NatSteel, although some investors suspect that he may yet do so.
Mr Oei' s latest move keeps attention on the liquid assets held by the target company, which are worth S$1.55 a share, or 76 per cent of the offer tabled by 98 Holdings.
