While China, the world&rsquo s second-largest economy, is facing a 145% levy, Trump is keeping his baseline 10% rate for most countries as foreign governments rush to secure deals with the administration.

Friday saw stocks erase their losses and notch their best week since 2023. The S& P 500 jumped 1.8% on a report that a Federal Reserve official said the central bank is ready to help stabilise markets, if needed. US 10-year yields came well off Friday&rsquo s highs, but saw their biggest weekly surge in more than two decades.

The volatility of recent days, however, shows no signs of easing with fears Trump&rsquo s campaign to use tariffs to bring manufacturing jobs back to the US and provide the federal government with more revenue will tip economies into recession and threaten the US&rsquo status as the world&rsquo s safe haven.

Trump on Friday downplayed that turmoil, saying: &ldquo I think the markets were solid today. I think people are seeing we are in great shape,&rdquo he said. And he insisted that the US dollar would &ldquo always&rdquo remain &ldquo the currency of choice&rdquo .

&ldquo If a nation said we are not going to be on the dollar, I would tell you that within about one phone call they would be back on the dollar. You always have to keep the dollar,&rdquo he added.

Trump also shrugged off fluctuations in US Treasuries, which he indicated this week were a factor in his shift on tariff policy. &ldquo The bond market&rsquo s going good. It had a little moment, but I solved that problem very quickly,&rdquo he said.

Still, even with temporary relief for other trading partners, the high tariff rate on China will drive up the average US duty rate to historic levels, according to  Bloomberg Economics. The drawn-out trade clash between the world&rsquo s two largest economies threatens US$690 billion (RM3.05 trillion) in trade.

Beijing on Friday raised tariffs on all US goods to 125%, mirroring a move by the White House that pushed duties on Chinese imports to the same level, on top of an existing 20% tax. China said it would not match any further hikes, but reiterated its vow to &ldquo fight to the end&rdquo with other &mdash unspecified &mdash countermeasures.

&ldquo I think something positive is going to come,&rdquo Trump told reporters on Friday, when asked about the trade fight with China, calling his counterpart Chinese President Xi Jinping &ldquo a very good leader, a very smart leader&rdquo .

US President Donald Trump said he could offer some exemptions to his 10% tariff on most US trading partners &mdash even as he insisted that it is &ldquo pretty close&rdquo to a floor for nations seeking to negotiate trade deals.

&ldquo There could be a couple of exceptions for obvious reasons, but I would say 10% is a floor,&rdquo Trump told reporters on Friday evening aboard Air Force One en route to Florida. He didn&rsquo t say what the &ldquo obvious reasons&rdquo were, and didn&rsquo t indicate any new shift in his tariff agenda.

Trump&rsquo s comments capped a tumultuous week for equity and bond markets and threaten to inject more uncertainty for countries, investors and businesses grappling with his trade policies. The president this week put in place sweeping higher tariffs on dozens of nations &mdash only to delay those levies hours later after seeing financial markets convulse as worries intensified that Trump&rsquo s import taxes could devastate the global economy.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) can benefit from  low oil prices  primarily through  lower operating costs, which are a major part of an airline&rsquo s expenses. Here' s how that plays out:

1. Fuel Cost Savings

  • Jet fuel  accounts for  25&ndash 40% of an airline&rsquo s total operating costs.

  • When oil prices fall (as they have recently, dropping below $63/barrel),  fuel becomes cheaper, directly boosting SIA&rsquo s bottom line.

  • Even with hedging contracts in place, airlines eventually adjust to spot market prices &mdash so SIA will see cost relief over time.

2. Better Margins and Competitiveness

  • With lower costs, SIA can:

    • Improve  profit margins  on routes, especially long-haul flights.

    • Offer more  competitive pricing  without sacrificing profit &mdash useful if demand weakens.

    • Possibly  increase frequency or open new routes  that weren&rsquo t profitable under higher fuel prices.

3. Cargo Division Boost

  • SIA Cargo also benefits from low fuel prices, helping with  air freight competitiveness, especially as global shipping adjusts to trade shifts and supply chain realignments post-tariffs.

Caveats

  • Demand-side pressure: If the U.S. tariffs slow global trade or spark recession fears,  passenger and cargo demandmight weaken &mdash especially from business travelers.

  • Geopolitical volatility might also affect oil prices and travel sentiment.

Summary:

Yes, Singapore Airlines stands to benefit from low oil prices  through reduced operating costs and improved profitability &mdash especially compared to competitors in countries facing higher U.S. tariffs or more volatile currencies. However, these gains could be limited if global demand drops sharply due to economic uncertainty

SIA and ANA receive approval to provide scheduled air passenger transport services between Singapore and Japan

SIA and ANA receive approval to provide scheduled air passenger transport services between Singapore and Japan

Singapore Airlines (SIA) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) have received conditional approval to provide scheduled air passenger transport services between Singapore and Japan, from the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS).

The two airlines first submitted a joint application to the CCCS on Jul 24, 2023 to clarify if the proposed cooperation would infringe on section 34 of the Competition Act 2004.

CCCS says that it reviewed information provided by the applicants and third party feedback and identified some competition concerns. This includes the fact that SIA and ANA possess substantial market shares offering direct flights on the Singapore-Tokyo routes and have sustained a high combined market share in recent years.

However, CCCS assessed that the impact on competition arising from expansion is not conclusive.

SIA and ANA said that the proposed cooperation would lead to a few benefits including improved connectivity between Singapore and Japan, with consequential benefits to Singapore&rsquo s aviation industry and tourism, and significant benefits to corporate account customers and greater reciprocal frequent flyer benefits for members of SIA and ANA.

Lady Gaga  announced her highly anticipated return to Singapore with four massive stadium shows this spring. Performing in the country for the first time in 13 years since her 2012 Born This Way Ball Tour, the four-show run at National Stadium kicks off on Sunday, May 18, 2025, with additional performances on May 19, 21, and 24. Lady Gaga' s Mayhem Tour in Singapore could have a positive impact on    Singapore Airlines' (SIA) share price  in several ways, although the effects may not be immediate or directly tied to the concert itself. Here' s how the event might influence SIA' s share price:

1.    Increased Passenger Demand

  • The influx of international concertgoers for Lady Gaga& rsquo s Singapore performance could boost flight bookings, especially if SIA capitalizes on this event by offering tailored services or promoting flights to Singapore. Increased demand for flights could lead to higher revenues, which might positively affect investor sentiment and, in turn, the share price.

2.    Strengthening Brand Image

  • If SIA is involved in the concert (sponsorship or partnerships), it could increase brand visibility and prestige. High-profile events like Lady Gaga' s concert associate the airline with global entertainment, reinforcing its image as a premium and international carrier. Investors often look favorably on companies that enhance their brand recognition, which could drive up the stock price.

3.    Tourism Growth

  • The concert will likely attract tourists from all over Asia and beyond. Increased tourism translates to more business for airlines, hotels, and local businesses, which can have a positive knock-on effect on SIA' s performance. Investors might view this as an opportunity for broader economic growth in Singapore, which could lead to a positive sentiment about SIA and its stock.

4.    Increased Revenue from Premium Customers

  • SIA is known for its premium services, and it could offer exclusive packages for concertgoers, such as first-class flights, VIP access, and special experiences. The boost in high-spending, affluent travelers can contribute to higher revenue streams, which would likely positively influence SIA& rsquo s stock price, especially in the luxury market.

5.    Market Sentiment

  • Events like Lady Gaga' s tour can create a buzz in the market, affecting overall investor sentiment toward Singapore Airlines. If the market sees this as a successful promotional opportunity, it may lead to optimism, which could drive short-term gains in the share price.

6.    Sector Performance

  • Positive events for SIA can also affect the broader airline industry in Singapore. If the event generates a lot of media attention and publicity, other local airlines might benefit, and this could lift the entire sector& rsquo s stock performance, with SIA likely being a beneficiary.

However, it' s important to note that the concert is just one factor in SIA' s overall financial performance. While there may be a short-term boost in stock price due to increased bookings and brand recognition, factors like fuel prices, global travel trends, and quarterly earnings will have a more significant and long-term impact on SIA' s share price.

Overall,    if the event translates into increased revenue and heightened brand prestige, it could have a    positive effect on SIA' s share price  in the short term, though the market& rsquo s broader conditions and other operational factors should also be considered.

The integration of Salesforce&rsquo s AI solutions, such as Agentforce and Einstein, could potentially have a positive impact on Singapore Airlines' (SIA) share price, though several factors will influence this outcome. Here' s how it could contribute to boosting SIA' s stock value:

  1. Improved Customer Experience and Efficiency: Enhanced customer service, driven by AI, can improve customer satisfaction and loyalty. As SIA becomes more efficient in handling customer queries and providing personalized services, it could lead to higher customer retention, increased sales, and improved profitability, which are attractive to investors.

  2. Cost Reduction: The AI-driven automation of routine tasks can lead to cost savings in customer service and operations. If SIA demonstrates the ability to reduce expenses while maintaining or improving service levels, it could have a positive impact on profit margins, which might drive investor confidence and contribute to a higher share price.

  3. Increased Competitiveness: Leveraging cutting-edge AI technology to enhance service quality and operational efficiency could position SIA as a more competitive player in the airline industry, especially in a time when customer experience is a key differentiator. This competitive edge could result in increased market share, potentially boosting investor sentiment and share price.

  4. Long-Term Growth Potential: SIA&rsquo s collaboration with Salesforce and investment in AI research could signal the company' s commitment to innovation and long-term growth. Investors often look for companies that are future-oriented, and SIA&rsquo s move to invest in digital transformation may be seen as a positive sign of its potential for growth in a rapidly evolving industry.

  5. Investor Perception of Digital Transformation: With Salesforce&rsquo s $1 billion investment in Singapore, and the focus on AI-driven solutions, the overall narrative of SIA embracing digital transformation could improve investor sentiment. A company that is perceived as adapting well to technological advancements is often seen as having a stronger future outlook, which can influence stock performance positively.

However, it' s important to note that share prices are influenced by a wide range of factors, including overall market conditions, fuel prices, global economic factors, competition, and regulatory changes. While the implementation of AI can improve operational efficiency and customer satisfaction, its direct impact on share price would depend on how effectively these benefits are realized and communicated to the market, as well as the broader economic environment at the time.
