BEIJING - A group of 22 Chinese authors have filed a claim against US technology group Apple, alleging its App Store sells unlicenced copies of their books.

The group, the Writers Rights Alliance, petitioned Apple last year to stop electronic distribution of the writers' books and had earlier persuaded Baidu, China's largest search engine, to stop publishing their material on its Baidu Library product.

The writers are seeking 50 million yuan ($8 million) compensation from Apple, saying it was selling pirated versions of 95 books via its online store. Xinhua Chinese state media reported on Sunday.

The Writers Rights Alliance could not be reached for comment, and a growing number of Chinese copyright holders are now also pressing for better protection.

The lawsuit adds to Apple's list of problems in China, has been embroiled in a long-running lawsuit with Chinese firm Proview Technology, which is fighting for control of the iPad trademark in China.

The unit of near-bankrupt Proview International Holdings has asked Chinese distributors to stop selling the iPad after Apple launched the latest version.

Apple is also battling allegations of poor working conditions among its army of low-cost suppliers in China.

Three workers at Foxconn Technology died in a blast last year when dust from polishing iPads ignited, and labour rights groups have said 18 workers at Foxconn sites killed themselves, or tried to, in 2010.

Apple share is bubbling hot, as apple boss start to releasing theirs abit, which could entice some retail investors to start buying again. The VIX, known as Wall Street's fear gauge, fell to a five-year low this week.

VIX - Chicago Board Options Exchange's index of mkt volatility, hit its lowest level since 2007 this wk. http://money.cnn.com/2012/03/15/markets/fear-index-vix/index.htm?iid=EL

In fact investors shouldn't get too complacent. VIX futures are predicting that the mkt will become more volatile soo - next mth??. The April VIX is hovering around 22.

" The current VIX is an optical illusion." " Investors are expecting the VIX to rise significantly in the next mth," said Jamie Tyrell, a derivatives trader at Group One.

Memory of last year's gut wrenching moves still fresh on investors' minds, it could take a while for the fear to subside and greed to kick in.

Who? beneficiaries of d RM8bn a yr income -  state govt, Lynas Aus, federal govt, Lynas (M) Sdn Bhd?

“Atomic Board has limited jurisdiction” (press report).

Does it mean that in matters outside its jurisdiction, it can wash its hands and put the blame on other agencies like the Malaysian Nuclear Agency, the Dept of Environment and even the State Development Corp?.

I  am sure those who built the plants in the Three Mile Island in USA (1979), Chernobyl (1986) and Fukushima (2011) had taken utmost precautions to prevent disasters and yet they happened. Thousands of people died in these disasters and thousands more are still suffering the after-effects of these disasters.

Do we want to have a similar situation in this country?
