STOCK PICKS---Barron' s Asia DBS: Singapore' s Best Bank Stock Can Rise 40% Down 35% since July, it' s time to start nibbling at this quality bank trading at 8 times and offering a 4% yield. Looking at the 35% slump in the shares of DBS Group investors could be forgiven for wondering whether it' s the same lender that perennially gets rated as one of the world' s safest banks. But that acclaim has meant little to investors in Singapore' s largest bank as its shares have dropped from a high around SGD21 in July to just under SGD14, a selloff that looks overdone given DBS (D05.SG) is one of the better quality bank stocks in Asia. Sure, the lender faces some headwinds from slower economic growth and the specter of bad debts, but long term investors should consider accumulating shares in a bank Barron' s Asia has written positively about over recent months. DBS ' troubled loans are marginal though, at about 0.9% of the total portfolio, and do not justify the low valuation, especially compared to banks elsewhere in Asia. Kuala Lumpur' s CIMB Group Holdings (1023.MY) has a non-performing loan ratio of over 3% but is more richly valued than DBS. Singh says he does not see the DBS portfolio as " overly risky." Concerns over asset quality are overcooked. Non-performing loans mostly come from a couple of oil and gas loans in Southeast Asia. Historically, these loans are still in a very low range for DBS too. So defaults are unlikely to blow out. China' s weaker growth has also cast a pall over the stock. However, most of DBS' s business in the world' s second largest economy is short-term trade finance, while other lending is to foreign companies and state-owned enterprises. These borrowers are less likely to default. Brokers have not given up on the shares, either The average price target for the stock is SGD20 a share -. About 40% higher than where the stock sits now DBS also pays a pretty handsome 4.2% dividend, which is still well covered by earnings.
