Pandemic has entered new phase in Asia-Pacific: WHO Nations that contained spread in early phase moving to new phase where large-scale disruptions can be minimised, it says The recent surge in cases in countries that had managed to contain the Covid-19 pandemic in its early months actually marks their move to a new phase for which they are better prepared, said a senior World Health Organisation (WHO) official. Dr Takeshi Kasai, WHO' s regional director for the Western Pacific, said at a virtual press conference yesterday: " What we are observing is not simply a resurgence. We believe it' s a signal that we' ve entered a new phase of the pandemic in the Asia-Pacific. " In this phase countries are increasingly able to minimise large-scale disruptions to people' s lives and economies." Countries such as Japan, Vietnam South Korea and Australia had moved quickly to contain Covid-19 in the early months of the pandemic, but are now fighting new surges. In some cases, the second wave is larger than the initial outbreaks, said Dr Kasai. The surge in cases is due to countries having relaxed their earlier stringent measures as they move towards reopening their economies. He said these countries " will need to deal with multiple increases or surges, but in a sustainable way" . They need to have " earlier targeted response" to prevent " big disruptions to the economy and people' s life" . They should continue to improve their healthcare system and protect the vulnerable. And people in these countries need to " maintain their healthy behaviour, not just protecting themselves, but also their family, communities" , while businesses have to find ways to operate as they minimise the risk of the virus spreading. Dr Kasai said: " By combining early detection and rapid response to emerging infections, and people sticking to the prevention measures that are part of the new normal, many (countries) are now detecting outbreaks earlier and responding to them faster, with more targeted intervention." Countries planning to open up " need to continue to improve their surveillance system, and share that information" . They must come up with an agreement with the other countries that allow travel on how to manage those who are travelling, so any problems are spotted and dealt with as early as possible. This agile approach will help them to restore their health systems, societies and economies. Dr Kasai added: " The direction that the epidemic now takes depends on the actions of governments and people across the region." The WHO' s Western Pacific region includes China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Pacific island states, among others. Asked about moves by some countries to open up for international travel, which has practically come to a standstill, Dr Kasai said countries should adopt " a risk-based approach" . They need to look at where people are travelling to and from, and the status of the outbreak in those countries. Other considerations include the kind of people who are coming into the country, and the controls or intervention that can be put in place. Dr Kasai said: " This requires continuous information sharing and assessment, and dialogue between the countries." Meanwhile, countries planning to open up " need to continue to improve their surveillance system, and share that information" . They must come up with an agreement with the other countries that allow travel on how to manage those who are travelling, so any problems are spotted and dealt with as early as possible. On the effect of mutation of the coronavirus, Dr Kasai said that based on the thousands of gene sequences available, this is a relatively stable virus, and work on a vaccine will not be affected. He said the " significant investments in health emergency preparedness made over several years" by countries in the region are paying off, and are one reason for the comparatively low Covid-19 numbers here. One lesson learnt during the pandemic is that a country' s response capacity has to be scalable, to match the size of the outbreak. Dr Kasai concluded: " Covid-19 will be with us for the foreseeable future. We know it' s a long and difficult stretch, and we will face setbacks. But we must keep trying, learning and doing it together. " How we fare is up to each and every one of us. If we make the right choices every day, we will come out of this as safe and as strong as possible." |

Vaccine won' t be a silver bullet, experts warn A vaccine will not be a silver bullet to end the Covid-19 pandemic and the world still needs to improve its response to fight the virus. Dr Takeshi Kasai, the World Health Organisation' s (WHO) regional director for the Western Pacific, said at a virtual press conference yesterday that he is cautiously optimistic about a Covid-19 vaccine - optimistic because he is very impressed by the speed of vaccine development, and cautious because even if a safe and effective vaccine is found, production capacity is unlikely to meet global demand. One country that has been actively involved in vaccine research and development is China, which has seven vaccine candidates advancing into phase two and phase three of clinical trials. Yet, despite the accelerated speed of research and development, a panel of three WHO experts stressed the need to ensure the safety and efficacy of all vaccine candidates. The international body has been " working with a number of research and development institutes across the world, and guiding the conduct and providing protocol for vaccine clinical trials" . In other countries, such as Japan, research, development and manufacturing of vaccines are also under way. One candidate is now in stage two of clinical trials and four other candidates are in the stages of pre-clinical studies, WHO said. In terms of manufacturing, at least two companies in Japan are already discussing the transfer of technology to manufacture the vaccines once they are approved, which would help allow for quicker scaling up of vaccine production. Covid-19: Don' t miss the latest on the outbreak and its impact Stay in the know with e-mail alerts   Sign up By signing up, you agree to our Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions. A safe and effective pandemic vaccine is a global public good that countries worldwide should have access to, the panel said at a question-and-answer segment during the press conference. The organisation called for rapid, fair and equitable access to any such vaccines globally. " We hope that the work that is ongoing in Japan and other countries in the region on research and development, and manufacturing of vaccines will benefit equally the other countries in the Western Pacific," the panel said. But ensuring fair and equitable vaccine distribution globally will not be easy, the WHO said. It noted, however, that the vaccine will not belong to a single country, but instead to all countries, as no country is safe unless all countries are protected. Initiatives will also be established to expedite the development and access for a safe and effective vaccine, and the WHO is working with countries around the world on this. When asked for the WHO' s opinion on the safety and effectiveness of Russia' s vaccine, which is ready to go into production, with the Philippines saying it is ready to receive it, the panel said the organisation is in the process of coordinating and contacting the scientists and experts, as well as the Russian regulatory authorities, to get evidence for this new vaccine. The first batch of Sputnik V - named in homage to the world' s first satellite, launched by the Soviet Union in 1957 - was developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Moscow in coordination with the Russian Defence Ministry. Russia has said industrial production is expected from next month and it plans to manufacture five million doses per month by December or next January. But a survey of 3,040 doctors and health specialists in Russia found the majority would not feel comfortable being injected with the new Covid-19 vaccine due to the lack of sufficient data about it and its super-fast approval. |

This stock needs patience , if no patience , just sell.   I will pick up .. bid by bid . There is a reason why the bb push a stock , is to trick you to buy at a high so that they can dump it to make our money . If they don' t make our money then who can they make the money from ?  bb is now busy with medtec , so for those holding on STA , just hold and wait , our turn will come.

STA Sing must be led by STA Thai and not the other way round. Any STA rise wull be depebdent on STGT. If you are bullish on STGT now, STGT will then drag up STA as STA will be deoendent on STGT earning contribution 56% for 3rd quarter profit. To reach Citibank TP base case of 71 Baht, STGT 4th quarters earnings need to exceed 3rd quarters profits coupled with the rise in rubber prices. Even Citi 88 baht bull case scenario will not look far fetched. Above TP objective is for a 12 months period for buy and hold investors dispeling all short term noises. STA counter is only for the faint hearted mkt participants as it is not a volatile counter. If you want to trade for fast profits, I suggest you trade volatile glove counters as every decent correction is a speculative short term buy after the overbought condition has happened as gloves counters will enjoy humongus profit every quarter due to increased ASP as long as the virus pandemic worsens further. | ||||
