dogs' abilities to sniff out cancer in patients. https://sg.entertainment.yahoo.com/blogs/pets/dogs-know-cancer-171700165.html A dog' s nose is a powerful tool: dogs have successfully sniffed out a number of cancers. A Labrador retriever could be just as effective at detecting cancer as a laboratory, according to ongoing studies that test dogs' abilities to sniff out cancer in patients.
A recent study found that trained dogs were able to detect prostate cancer in urine with 98 percent accuracy. Two 3-year-old, female German shepherds were trained at the Italian Ministry of Defense' s Military Veterinary Center using positive reinforcement to recognize prostate cancer-specific volatile organic compounds. Also see: What is your dog trying to tell you? Take the quiz Dogs analyzed more than 400 urine samples, and one dog detected prostate cancer with 100 accuracy, while the 2nd had 98.6% accuracy. However, prostate cancer isn' t the only type of cancer dogs have successfully sniffed out. Man' s best friends have also proved their noses can detect breast, ovarian, colon, bladder, skin and lung cancer, typically by smelling breath samples. Also see: Diabetic alert dogs save lives. Govt supports proposals for MediShield Life
Those with pre- existing conditions will be covered

Extending coverage to those with pre-existing conditions, substantially increasing claim limits, especially for outpatient cancer chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments, and starting premium rebates from age 66 instead of 71, were some of the recommendations put up by the MediShield Life Review Committee (MLRC) yesterday. - PHOTO: SPH [SINGAPORE] Extending coverage to those with pre-existing conditions, substantially increasing claim limits, especially for outpatient cancer chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments, and starting premium rebates from age 66 instead of 71, were some of the recommendations put up by the MediShield Life Review Committee (MLRC) yesterday.
While the enhancements - comprising the raising of claim limits and lowering of co-insurance - will inevitably result in an increase in premiums, the government said it will ensure that Medisave withdrawal limits will be sufficient for all MediShield Life premiums. It also said that it accepted the committee' s recommendation and will bear most of the cost of bringing in those with pre-existing conditions. " In this way, the government will help all Singaporeans, including those with pre-existing conditions and those who are currently excluded, achieve MediShield Life cover, while ensuring that premiums are kept affordable for policyholders," said the Ministry of Health in a statement yesterday. However, those with pre-existing conditions will have to pay 30 per cent higher premiums to reflect their higher risks, over a period of 10 years. Meanwhile, the premium increase for remaining policyholders as a result of universal coverage should be no more than 3 per cent from current premiums, said the committee, adding that this reflects public support for inclusiveness that the committee has gleaned from its feedback sessions. While premiums will inevitably rise, to support the increased benefits, the government will take on the bulk of the cost, stressed the committee. In addition, to help offset costs, from next year, the employer contribution to Medisave will rise by one percentage point, as announced in the Singapore Budget 2014. The government added that it will ensure that Medisave withdrawal limits are sufficient for all MediShield Life premiums. A range of subsidies, financial assistance, and other forms of funding support for the lower to middle-income classes (this constitutes up to two-thirds of the population) will also be a " permanent feature" of the scheme. For the Pioneer Generation, the premium subsidies will be for life. Separately, transitional subsidies will be extended to all Singapore citizens, regardless of income, over four years, to help Singaporeans adjust to the premium increases. Meanwhile, the Life Insurance Association, Singapore (LIA) also announced that the MediShield Life recommendations will have a minimal impact on the private insurance premiums component of Integrated Shield Plans. Integrated Shield Plans are policies that provide additional benefits beyond MediShield coverage some 60 per cent of all Singaporeans have Integrated Shield Plans. The Labour Movement also voiced its support for MediShield Life, but added that it is important to ensure its relevance. " As the biggest employer in Singapore, the government could lead by example and increase its one per cent Additional Medisave Contribution in the existing Medisave-cum-Subsidised Outpatient (MSO) Scheme to cater for premiums and medical costs," said the National Trades Union Congress in a statement. " Similar, other employers can make additional Medisave contributions to boost workers' ability to pay for MediShield Life premiums," it added. Another area to look into is that of a tiered withdrawal scheme for Medisave where older Singaporeans, depending on their age, are allowed to withdraw more compared to younger Singaporeans for outpatient needs, said Halimah Yacob, chair of the PAP.SG committee. " This will help our seniors with sufficient Medisave balances as they will not have to pay cash when they visit the outpatient clinics which is a drain on them," she said. The MediShield Life Review Committee is expected to release its final report by end-June. The government will then respond to the committee' s full recommendations and share details of the finalised premiums and subsidiaries by early July.   |

http://www.truthaboutabs.com/worst-aging-food.html Due to biochemical reactions in your body that occur with every type of food you eat on a daily basis. Some foods age you FASTER than your real age, while other foods help to FIGHT aging. Eat the wrong foods regularly, and you can look and feel 10 or more years OLDER than your real age - not fun :((, but eat the right foods, and over time, you can start to look 5-10 years YOUNGER than your real age. :)) Three of the processes that go on inside your body that have a MAJOR impact on your rate of aging are called " glycation" , " inflammation" , and " oxidation" . When we talk about aging, we' re not just talking about wrinkles on your skin or how thick your hair is... we' re also talking about factors that you can' t see, such as how well your organs function, and whether your joints are degrading. Yes, I' m sure you' ll agree this is much more important than just how you look superficially (although we' ll show you how to improve BOTH below!) With the title of this article, you might have guessed that obvious answers like sugar or trans fat would be what we talk about in this article. Yes, we all already know those are bad, but I want to discuss another food that ages your body faster than normal... and it' s one that you might not expect! So let' s dig right in and I' ll show you how your rate of aging can be directly related to the foods you might eat every day, and how to protect yourself... Wheat based foods (yes, even " whole wheat" ) Before I tell you why wheat can actually speed up the aging process in your body, let' s clarify some simple biochemistry in your body... This deals with " glycation" in your body, and substances called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). These nasty little compounds called AGEs speed up the aging process in your body including damage over time to your organs, your joints, and of course, wrinkled skin. So with that said, what is one of the biggest factors that increase production of AGEs inside your body? This may surprise you, but high blood sugar levels over time dramatically increase age-accelerating AGEs in your body. This is why type 2 diabetics many times appear that they have not aged well and look older than their real age. But this age-increasing effect is not just limited to diabetics. So, let' s get back to how " whole wheat" relates to this... Here is a little-known fact that' s often covered up by the massive marketing campaigns by giant food companies that want you to believe that " whole wheat" is healthy for you... but the fact is that wheat contains a very unusual type of carbohydrate (not found in other foods) called Amylopectin-A, which has been found in some tests to spike your blood sugar HIGHER than even pure table sugar. In fact, amylopectin-A (from wheat) raises your blood sugar MORE than almost any other carbohydrate source on earth based on blood sugar response testing that' s documented in studies. It  means wheat-based foods such as breads, bagels, cereals, muffins, and other baked goods often cause MUCH higher blood sugar levels than most other carbohydrate sources. If you don' t believe me, here' s something you should know. I ran personal blood sugar tests on myself using a blood glucometer about 45 minutes after eating 2 slices of wheat bread vs eating a bowl of oatmeal, with equivalent grams of carbs. teeth53 thot - U odd to know something and sharing this information with all in SJ.   |

https://sg.news.yahoo.com/painful-rapid-spread-virus-caribbean-040106421.html Suffering searing headaches, a burning fever and so much pain in their joints they can barely walk or use their hands. It' s like having a terrible flu combined with an abrupt case of arthritis. Hospitals are seeing thousands of people with the same symptoms, locally transmitted case was confirmed in December. " Feel it in your bones, fingers and your hands. It' s like coming apart," A 34-year-old Sahira and her daughter said. Since Dec 2014 virus has found fertile ground in Caribbean, more than 55,000 suspected and confirmed cases. It also reached French Guiana, a first confirmed transmission on South American mainland. Two species of mosquitoes that spread chikungunya are found in the south & eastern U.S. Already, Florida Dept of Health has reported at least four imported cases from travelers to Haiti, the Dominican Republic & Dominica. " We' re seeing an increase in the number of infected cases. " It' s building up like a snowball because of the constant movement of people," said Jacqueline Medina, a specialist at the Instituto Technologico university in the Dominican Republic, where some hospitals report more than 100 new cases per day. The Pan American Health Organization says 7- peoples in Caribbean with chikungunya have died during outbreak, they had underlying health issues that likely contributed to their death. Chikungunya was identified in Africa in 1953 and throughout the tropics of the Eastern Hemisphere. It is spread by two species of mosquitoes, aedes aegypti and aedes albopictus. It' s also a traveler-borne virus and can spread if virus has circulating in their area in a relatively short time, roughly 2-3 days before onset of symptoms to 5 days after. In 2007, northern Italy has an outbreak, so a matter of time before it spread, said Dr. Roger Nasci, of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. " With the increase in travelers, this would happen," said Nasci, chief of a CDC branch. Around Caribbean, authorities have been spraying fogs of pesticides and urging people to remove standing pools of water where mosquitoes breed. An estimated 60-90% those infected show symptoms, compared to around 20% for dengue. The virus is chikungunya, derived from an African word that loosely translates as " contorted with pain." People encountering it is rarely fatal it is extremely debilitating. There is no vaccine and the only cure is treatment for the pain and fluid loss. One consolation for those suffering from the illness is that unlike dengue, which has several variants, people only seem to get chikungunya once. " The evidence suggests that once you get it and recover, once your immune system clears the virus you are immune for life." |

Superbugs, also known as drug-resistant bacterial infections, that are hard to treat. Clever germs (their very own micro world)  have found ways to survive in the face of treatments with antibiotics, that usually kill bacteria. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), all bacterial infections in the world are slowly becoming resistant to antibiotic treatments. B' cos disease-causing bacteria are living organisms that constantly evolve, enabling them to adapt to new environments. Resistance develops over time &mdash it can start from even a very small number of microbes within a population that have genes that allow them to continue to grow, despite the use of drugs that would normally kill them. 8 Things You Should Know About MERS https://sg.news.yahoo.com/8-things-know-mers-201340333.html Since late March, there have been 330 new cases of MERS worldwide, mostly in Saudi Arabia. What you need to know » MERS is a respiratory condition caused by a virus that' s only recently been seen in humans. MERS and SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome)belong to the same family, called coronaviruses, the 2-viruses are not the same. MERS coronavirus has been found in camels in Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, according to World Health Organization. But researchers can' t say for sure if people caught the disease from camels. two confirmed cases of MERS infection in the United States. Both cases were in people who caught the virus abroad and traveled to the United States. 1st case was in a person who traveled from Saudi Arabia to Chicago in late April, and took a bus to Indiana. Patient has fully recovered, and none of the patient' s close contacts have signs of MERS. Case no-2  was in a health care worker, left Saudi Arabia to travel to Orlando on May 1, and has since been hospitalized. Two health care workers who had contact with the 2nd patient have since become ill, and health officials are investigating whether these people may have caught MERS. Risk of MERS to general U.S. public from two MERS cases is extremely low. Transmission of MERS appears to require close contact. 330 new cases of MERS worldwide. Prior to that, fewer than 200 cases over 1.5-year period between Sept 2012 and Feb 2014. Recent increase in MERS cases is not fully understood. A number of new cases occurred during outbreaks in hospitals, but there has also been a rise in " sporadic" cases, in which patients did not have contact with anyone else who had MERS, according to WHO. Increase may have been a result of better monitoring efforts, according to Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the CDC, meaning health officials are detecting more cases and have sequenced the genome of the virus, and so far, it does not appear to be mutating. The time between exposure to virus and when he or she becomes sick is usually about 5-days, and 14-days at the most, according to the CDC. People who develop fever, cough or shortness of breath within 2-weeks of traveling in or near the Arabian Peninsula should see their doctor.   |

https://sg.news.yahoo.com/study-lists-dangerous-chemicals-linked-breast-cancer-133241727.html Certain chemicals are common in everyday life, shown to cause breast cancer in lab rats and are likely to do the same in women. The paper in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Health Perspectives lists 17 chemicals to avoid and offers women advice. Include chemicals, gasoline, diesel and other vehicle exhaust, flame retardants, stain-resistant textiles, paint removers, and disinfection byproducts in drinking water. " Study provides a road map for breast cancer prevention by identifying high-priority chemicals that women are most commonly exposed." said study author Ruthann Rudel, research director of the Silent Spring Institute. " This information will guide efforts to reduce exposure to chemicals linked to breast cancer, and help researchers study how women are being affected," she said. Some biggest sources of mammary carcinogens in environment are benzene and butadiene, from vehicle exhaust, lawn equipment, tobacco smoke and charred food. Other are cleaning solvents like methylene chloride, pharmaceuticals used in hormone replacement therapy, some flame retardants, chemicals in stain-resistant textiles and nonstick coatings, and styrene which comes from tobacco smoke and is also used to make Styrofoam, the study said. Carcinogens can also be found in drinking water, researchers said - " Every woman in America has been exposed to chemicals that may increase risk of getting breast cancer," said co-author Julia Brody. " Unfortunately, the link between toxic chemicals and breast cancer has largely been ignored. Reducing chemical exposures could save many, many women' s lives." Brody described the paper as the first comprehensively list potential breast carcinogens and detail ways for experts to measure them in women' s blood and urine..... The research was funded by the Avon Foundation. The Silent Spring Institute is a 20-year-old organization made up of scientists who focus on the environment and women' s health. |

http://edition.cnn.com/2014/05/05/health/young-blood-mice-aging/index.html STORY HIGHLIGHTS
(CNN) -- The fountain of youth might not be made of water after all. Three new studies describe how the blood of young mice may help rejuvenate the brains and muscle tissues of older mice. For now, it has only been tried in rodents, but this line of research might one day lead to therapies for medical conditions often found in aging humans. " It' s really exciting," said Amy Wagers of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, senior author of one of the studies published in the journal Science. " It says there' s a coordination of signals through the blood system that' s affecting aging in many different organs." Advances in this line of research raises the possibility of a single treatment for conditions such as cardiac disease, neurodegeneration and muscle wasting, Wagers said. |

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/various-bacterial/1098118.html SINGAPORE: According to World Health Organisation, resistance to antibiotics poses a " major global threat" to public health. And in Singapore, the Ministry of Health (MOH) is aware of the problem. Various bacterial infections here have been found to develop different degrees of resistance to antibiotics. Also emerging are cases of bacterial infections that are resistant to certain powerful, broad spectrum antibiotics, which are considered the last line of defence. One of the causes of resistance is the over-use of antibiotics. |

Why coffee may be good for your eyes Mon, May 5, 2014 (AFP)
A coffee a day could help keep eye diseases at bay. That?s according to a joint study out of South Korea and the US, which concluded that powerful antioxidants found in coffee can play a role in preventing age-related eye diseases and the degeneration of eyesight. For their research, scientists looked at the impact of chlorogenic acid or CLA, a strong antioxidant that has been shown to prevent retinal degeneration in mice. To conduct their experiment, mice were treated with nitric oxide, which creates oxidative stress and free radicals and leads to retinal degeneration. Those that were pretreated with CLA developed no sign of retinal damage. The retina is a thin tissue located on the back wall of the eye that receives and organizes visual information, researchers explain. It?s also one of the most metabolically active tissues and requires high levels of oxygen. Without it, the tissue is particularly vulnerable to oxidative stress and prone to the production of free radicals, which leads to tissue damage and loss of sight. However, it?s not yet known whether or not drinking coffee delivers CLA directly to the retina, researchers stress. Future studies could lead to development of a special brew customized for retinal support, or CLA delivery via eye drops. Study, published in Journal of Agricultural & Food Chemistry, is the latest to vaunt the nutritional merits of coffee. Another large scale, US-led study published recently in the journal European Association for the Study of Diabetes found people who drank three or more cups of coffee a day had the lowest risk of type 2 diabetes -- 37% lower than those who consumed one cup or less per day. Scientists looked at the coffee consumption patterns of 95,000 women and 28,000 men. |

ARARAS, Brazil (AP) &mdash   Rare disease -    A village where the people melt away. Tucked in Brazil' s midwest, Araras is home to what is thought to be the largest single group of people suffering from a rare inherited skin disease known as xeroderma pigmentosum, or " XP." XP disease are extremely sensitive to ultraviolet rays from sunlight and highly susceptible to skin cancers. It robs victims of the ability to repair the damage caused by the sun. " I was always exposed to the sun &mdash working, planting and harvesting rice and caring for the cows," said Djalma Antonio Jardim, 38. " As the years passed my condition got worse." XP shows early signs that it has taken hold of its victims. Jardim was just 9 when a large number of freckles and small lumps started appearing on his face, the tell-tale signs that experts say signal XP is present in children. Precaution wasn' t taken for Jardim, who now wears a large straw hat in an effort to protect his face. But it' s helped little and  has undergone more than 50 surgeries to remove skin tumors. In an effort to camouflage how the disease has eaten away the skin on his lips, nose, cheeks and eyes, Jardim wears a rudimentary orange-tinted mask, its stenciled-in right eyebrow not matching his bushy real one that remains. Beyond skin damage and cancers, about one in five XP patients may also suffer from deafness, spastic muscles, poor coordination or developmental delays, according to the U.S.-based National Cancer Institute. More than 20 people in this community of about 800 have XP. That' s an incidence rate of about one in 40 people &mdash far higher than the one in 1 million people in the United States who have it. " The doctors I went to said I had a blood disorder. Others said I had a skin problem. But none said I had a genetic disease," Jardim said. " It was only in 2010 that my disease was properly diagnosed." Experts say Araras has such a high incidence rate because the village was founded by only a few families and several were carriers of the disease, so it was passed to future generations as villagers intermarried. For instance, both of Jardim' s parents were carriers of the defective gene that causes the disease. Gleice Francisca Machado, a village teacher whose 11-year-old son, Alison, has XP, has studied its history in the area and says she found cases of people having the disease going back 100 years. |

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of blindness among elderly, followed by cataracts. Without fats such as omega-3, your cells cannot function properly, and this applies to your eyes as well. Fish has always been an ideal source of omega-3 fats EPA and DHA, but in recent years, most fish have become too contaminated by environmental pollution to be safely eaten in large quantities on a regular basis. Omega-3 fat DHA is concentrated in your eye' s retina. It provides structural support to cell membranes that boost eye health and protect retinal function, and research suggests eating more foods rich in these fats may slow macular degeneration. For example, research has shown that:
