On one hand it allows the company to hedge against a specific product or business downturn, but on other hand it may cause management to lose specialized focus or stretch resources beyond optimum. Anchor's proposes acquisition is interesting. Company clearly said it is for diversification. Gold and granite are so different and I am not aware of industry complements - maybe manufacturing and mining processes may have knowledge synergies. Anchor's gold business is still spluterring from last we heard. To buy an existing company and business that presumably they have conducted a ROI analysis and is earnings accretive appear to make sense as gold production is still in the red. I guess like all things it is down to management execution. Time will tell if this Anchor purchase is brilliant or a dud. If one is risk adverse, better to stick to CNMC if one wants to invest in mining / precious metals theme in SGX. If one believes in going for higher beta stocks with an early mover contrarian approach, then Anchor may offer an interesting play in a widely anticipated gold pre bull cycle. Anchor's price is half IPO level and at least Anchor management appears to be proactive to shore up and plan company's business outlook and fortunes - far better than so many passive management in so many companies that are indifferent to eroding retail shareholders value. Call it punting or high risk / high yield play, Anchor does offer an interesting different play on the gold theme. Like all cases with equities, key prerequisites to enter this stock is the belief there is no Management shenanigans and company has good governance and audit system. Remarks : Just sharing. Not vested. Current gold bull.
