Errant conduct by industry peer ASE may benefit company A week ago, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc (ASE), was ordered by the local government of Kaohsiung, China, to close part of their production complex in the state after they were found dumping wastewater containing heavy metals into Houjing Creek, a major source of irrigation water for farmland in southern Taiwan. The world's largest integrated circuit packaging and testing services provider with 30% global market share was given 10 days to explain and correct its misconduct, or face a suspension or shutdown of its K7 plant, a substantial revenue generator (~9%) for the group. Market observers note that client orders which have been affected by the disruption may potentially see order flow towards ASE's competitors. One of the beneficiaries includes SGX-listed STATS-ChipPac Ltd. At the current price, STATS ChipPAC trades at an attractive 0.59x P/B. In addition, investors would be able to gain exposure to TSMC, a key client of STATS ChipPAC, which is tipped to emerge as the main beneficiary to Apple's diversification strategy of its supply chain, away from Samsung.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), a key client of Stats Chippac, is very optimistic that 2014 will be a double-digit growth year on the back of inventory restocking and seasonal recovery. Following China's award of 4G network licenses last week to the three telecom majors, market watchers now expect a ramp-up of mobile internet usage in China, presenting a very big opportunity for chip companies. Separately, China Mobile inked a distribution agreement with Apple and is expected to start pre-orders for the iPhone tomorrow. This allows Apple to tap on a network with more than 750m subscribers - twice the population of US - the majority (77-80%) of which have yet to upgrade to a 3G service at this point in time. As Apple seeks to diversify its supply chain away from Samsung, TMSC is tipped to emerge as the main beneficiary. The world?s contract chip-maker is slated to be a major manufacturer for Apple's new 20 nanometer A8 processor, which will appear in the new iDevices. Market observers expect that 2015 will be the time when all of Apple products will start using TSMC chips. In turn, Stats Chippac, which offers chip-testing services, could see a flow through of orders from TSMC. At the current price, Stats Chippac valuations are undemanding at 0.54x P/B.

While the overall PMI reading fell short of expectations - dipping 0.4 to expand at 50.8 last month - the electronics index continued to strengthen, pointing to a surer-footed recovery for the sector. The electronics PMI - which expanded further to 51.2 from 51 in October - gels well with recent economic indicators just a week ago, another double- digit jump in electronics output boosted Singapore's manufacturing performance in October. Economists BT spoke to say the collective data underscores how the electronics recovery is " still intact" . |

Stats Chippac races 11% today. We note that this comes few days after key client, TSMC, the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer, reported record revenue and income, buoyed by increased adoption of leading-edge manufacturing technologies by its clients. Led by strong contributions from its contract chip manufacturing segment, TSMC has continually posted strong earnings, although the group guides for a slow down in the fourth quarter, on back of softening demand for high-end smartphones, as handset vendors clears their current inventories. TSMC however remains positive on the outlook of its chip business, and expect 1Q14 to see better prospects, as the company begins volume manufacturing of chips using its new 20-nanometer process, which offers 30% higher chip speeds over its 28-nanometer technology. Meanwhile the group expects continued rising long-term demand for tablets and smartphones, which could be extended further to devices like smartwatches, which will boost the demand for mobile chips. Companies with notable exposure in the semiconductor?s sphere include STATS ChipPAC and UMS and the latest news could raise some concerns amongst investors. STATS is among the market leaders in the semiconductor back-end test and assembly space and counts TSMC as a key client. |

This is a good news for Stats Chipac 's 3rd Qtr and most important , we will be seeing an Upwards forecast for Qtr 4, I guess. IC suppliers unlikely to cut orders at TSMC in 4Q13
Cage Chao, Taipei Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Friday 11 October 2013]
The high wafer shipment growth recorded by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in August and September indicates that global IC suppliers are not pessimistic about their business outlook and will not cut significantly their wafer start orders for the fourth quarter of 2013, according to industry watchers. Despite warning of a possible overly build-ups of inventory in the IC industry in the fourth quarter of 2013 or in early 2014 by TSMC chairman Morris Chang, most IC vendors have continued to take wafer deliveries from the foundry house, the sources noted. TSMC collected revenues of NT$162.6 billion (US$5.54 billion) for the third quarter of 2013, hitting a record and meeting its guidance of NT$161-164 billion. The strong wafer shipment growth also indicates that demand in the end-device market has been growing faster than expected, alleviating concerns that the inventory dates and volumes would mount up over the industry's averages by year-end 2013, commented the sources. With the approach of year-end holiday season as well as the upcoming Lunar New Year holidays, IC suppliers are expected to land more IC orders from hardware devices vendors, and therefore will not slow down their orders for wafer starts at TSMC in the fourth quarter, said the sources. |

STATS ChipPAC, Sigurd look to sustained growth in 3Q13
Mavis Hong, Taipei Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 10 September 2013]
IC backend service companies STATS ChipPAC Taiwan and Sigurd Microelectronics have received a handful of orders that will help them sustain strong revenues in the third quarter of 2013, according to industry sources. Continued orders from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and turnkey testing orders from its parent company will help STATS ChipPAC Taiwan to maintain its sales momentum in the third quarter, the sources noted. STATS ChipPAC Taiwan posted revenues of NT$146 million (US$4.92 million) for August, representing an increase of 7.4% on the previous month and the company's highest monthly figures in the past 10 months. STATS ChipPAC Taiwan is expected to see its revenues expand 23-25% sequentially in the third quarter, while maintaining a gross margin of 48%, the sources estimated. Sigurd saw its revenues hit a record high of NT$475 million in August, thanks to testing orders for dual- and quad-core solutions from MediaTek, the sources pointed out. Sigurd's orders from clients in the US and Japan have been steady recently, which will enable the company to keep its capacity utilization rate running higher in the third quarter, said the sources. |

STATS ChipPAC Ltd said on late Monday that it has successfully reached a further insurance settlement of about US$19.6 million, that will be recognized as exceptional gain in the third quarter 2013 results. This will increase adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) for the third quarter 2013 by the same amount. The adjusted EBITDA excludes the restructuring, plant closure and associated charges related to its announced plan for the Malaysia plant. It is in addition to the US$26.7 million obtained in October 2012 as compensation for plant and equipment damages |

Marathon Asset has most probably sold off most their remaining holding.  Strong holders/ buyers have quietly moved into this stock after the price is whacked down to last year low.  It is more than 6 years after the failed take-over by Temasek in 2007.  Another exit offer by Temasek will send the price flying!  After heavy losses for the closure of Malaysia plant in the 2nd quarter result, the 3rd quarter should be in the black.  Electronic manufacturing is usually very strong in the 3rd quarter to meet the year end demand for consumers products.  SOX Semi-condcutor index is trending up and Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASX) has recovered to this January high.  Only STATSChp is cheap cheap!  Price is going at a huge discount to NAV of $0.56.    Very easy to pump up with free float of only 16% with most investors stuck at the high of $$1.40 (after cash distribution of US$ 0.2724525 in 18 Oct 2010). Vested in this stock. |
