European stocks set for cautious open in thin holiday trade European stocks are expected to open flat on Tuesday amid thin trading volumes during the holiday period in the region. The German DAX is called 4 points lower at 11,453, while the French CAC is seen down 2 points at 4,837. London' s FTSE 100 is closed. European trade is expected to follow the muted session in Asia where low volumes have sent shares mildly higher. In the U.S. on Friday, equity markets closed mostly flat on Friday ahead of the Christmas holiday, as the Dow Jones industrial average failed again to reach the psychologically important level of 20,000. Investors will be eyeing Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena after the European Central Bank told the troubled Italian lender that it needs to plug an 8.8 billion euro ($ 9.2 billion) capital shortfall.   |

Asia markets mixed Asian shares opened mixed on Tuesday amid low-volume holiday trading, after weaker-than-expected economic data out of Japan and a sharp drop for shares of Toshiba related to its Westinghouse unit. Meanwhile, the household consumer price index (CPI) slipped 0.4 percent year-on-year in November, compared to the market consensus of a 0.3 percent dip, while November household spending also fell 1.5 percent from the previous year. Meanwhile, the jobs- Applicants ratio rose to 1.41 from 1.4 in October, its highest level since July 1991. The mostly weaker data suggests that the economy might have some way to go before the central bank can meet its 2 percent inflation target. A Bank of Korea survey released Monday showed consumer sentiment to its worst level in more than seven and a half years in December, amid a political scandal and volatile financial markets. Markets in Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand will be shut for public holidays. In other news, security forces remain on high alert amid the festive period. On Christmas Day, the Australian police said they prevented attacks in Melbourne, while the Indonesian police killed two suspect Islamist militants in a shootout, as part of a series of raids aimed Earlier last week, the Indonesian anti-terrorism police force killed three suspects in Jakarta, foiling a planned suicide bombing. In the currency markets, the dollar index traded at 103.01, compared to levels as high as 103.25 last week. Against the greenback, the yen fetched 117.21, while the Australian dollar remained under pressure at $ 0.7179, at its lowest since May. Oil prices continued to gain, as the market watches how the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries will manage their planned output cuts. US crude closed up 0.1 percent at $ 53.02, at its highest close since July 2015, while Brent gained 0.2 percent to settle at $ 55.16 A barrel. Asian Indexes

Stocks close flat as Dow fails to reach 20,000 ahead of Christmas U.S. equities closed mostly flat on Friday ahead of the Christmas holiday, as the Dow Jones industrial average failed again to reach the psychologically important level of 20,000. The Dow closed about 15 points higher, with UnitedHealth contributing the most gains. " This is the last full trading week of the year. The Dow has been flirting with 20,000 and what I think is happening is a pause to digest a massive move higher, " Said Adam Sarhan, CEO at 50 Park Investments." The market does not go straight up. I think this market action is healthy. " Trading volume in the U.S. deposits this week, as most investors and traders have left their offices in light of the Christmas holiday. U.S. markets will be closed Monday in observance of the holiday. " Many of those who work at buy side have been left for the tropics or the mountains. Although the extremely thin liquidity ahead of the long weekend make stocks susceptible to a bit of bullying, shares should drift quietly during the next several hours, Said Jeremy Klein, chief market strategist at FBN Securities. In economic news, consumer sentiment for December came in at 98.2, above the expected read of 98.0. New home sales rose 5.2 percent last month, more than expected. Overseas, investors kept an eye on European banks, after Italy approved a state bailout for Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the world' s oldest bank and the country' s third-largest lender. Meanwhile, Credit Suisse agreed in principle to pay US authorities $ 2.48 billion to settle claims it misled investors in residential mortgage-backed securities it sold in the run-up to the 2008 financial crisis. Germany' s Deutsche Bank also agreed to settle a separate lawsuit with the US government. " There is some good news for European banking sector," Naeem Aslam, chief market analyst at Think Markets, said in a note. " However, the holes in this sector are still far from being filled, as [Monte de Paschi] has Also asked for a rescue fund which the Italian government may have to provide as well. Straits Times Index  2,871.05   -0.38%   -10.99   ▼
Singapore shares finish lower STI down 2.2% for week THE penultimate week of 2016 was not memorable as the Trump-inspired rally of the previous five weeks lost momentum and as liquidity drained rapidly away. On Friday, the eve of Christmas eve, the Straits Times Index dropped 10.99 points to 2,871.05, bringing its loss for the week to 66 points or 2.2 per cent.  To be honest though, this was not surprising - the Christmas / New Year holiday period traditionally sees trading wind down to a virtual standstill as traders close their books and depart for their vacations, and this year was no different.   |

Just return from hinernation, hahaha. Am curious that when I was away for so long, did all my SJ friends made alot of money in 2016?,   If you have won some, I am here to give you a heartfelt and one most encouraged congratulation.   But if you have lost, it is my wish that hopefully didn' t lose alot of money, it is my, hope you could make back in 2017.   So, with the coming holidays, enjoy a blessed X' mas and a coming Happy New Year in the year of the Rooster.   Hope this coming is going to be a good year and a good fighter cock that fights the damned SGX market that many lost their hard earned.   Lol.   Blessed.   |

Dow fails again to hit 20,000 as stocks fall U.S. equities fell on Thursday, with consumer discretionary lagging, as investors digested a series of economic data, while the Dow Jones industrial average failed to reach a key psychological level. " Dow 20,000, we believe that' s a major psychological wall for investors," said Jeff Kravetz, regional investment strategist at the Private Client Reserve at U.S. Bank. " It' s going to require a major catalyst for investors to go over that wall." " What we' re seeing here is a tired market," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at First Standard Financial. " I think it' s mostly a lack of volume. A lot of traders and institutional have already made their moves" for the year . In Europe, stocks closed mostly lower amid concerns surrounding the region' s banks. Earlier on Thursday, the Italian government approved a $ 20.8 billion bailout for Monte dei Paschi, one of Italy' s largest lenders and the oldest bank in the world. News about the rescue fund came a day after the bank said it could run out of cash in around two months. Read more....   |

Straits Times Index  2,882.04   -0.68%-19.66▼
Singapore shares close down, bank sell-off drags STI marginally into red for year The Straits Times Index (STI) on Thursday slipped marginally into the red for 2016 when it lost points at 2,882.04 in response to a 0.8 per cent loss in Hong Kong' s Hang Seng Index and a 25-point drop in the Dow futures. Turnover at 1.3 billion units worth S $ 758 million was the lowest in at least a month, though it was not unexpected given the upcoming holidays. Excluding warrants, there were 141 rising versus 276 falls. Throughout the year, the STI has struggled to stay above 2,882.73, the level at which it ended 2015. On the three or four previous occasions when it managed to rise above this level, the stay there did not last long. This time round, the Index rose above 2,882 on Nov 30 so it spent three weeks in the black for the year. On Thursday, history repeated own when the selling of mainly bank shares dragged the STI down to an intraday low of 2,874 before a late bounce cut its loss to just 0.69 of a point for 2016 so far.   |
