A man Dies of Flesh-Eating bacteria just days after he developed rare infection from Ocean water: What Is Vibrio Vulnificus?
LiveScience.com - 17 hours ago In Maryland. The man, Michael Funk, 67, had a cut on his leg that came into contact with the salty water in a bay near his home in Ocean city. The cut allowed bacteria called Vibrio vulnificus to enter his bloodstream. Soon, Funk began to experience intense pain in his leg and was taken to hospital, where doctors removed infected skin, and later, amputated his leg. But within 4-days, the fast-moving infection had taken his life. Vibrio vulnificus is found in warm coastal waters, and is present at higher levels between May and Oct, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Infected by bacteria in two ways, consuming contaminated seafood, and by having an open wound that comes into direct contact with seawater. If a wound that's exposed to the bacteria, as in Funk's case, the bacteria can infect the skin and cause skin breakdown and ulcers. These infections can progress to affect the whole body, and lead to life-threatening symptoms, including dangerously low blood pressure or septic shock, CDC said. Once bloodstream infection occurs, prognosis is grim: About 50% of the V.vulnificus bloodstream infections are fatal. Still, serious illness from the bacteria is rare: CDC estimates among 80,000 people in U.S. Sick with Vibrio bacteria per year, about 100 die from the infection. To prevent infection with V. vulnificus, the CDC recommends that people with open wounds avoid contact with salt or brackish water, or cover their wound with a waterproof bandage. To avoid a foodborne illness from the bacteria, the CDC recommends that people do not eat raw or undercooked shellfish. Original article on Live Science |

Inadequate sleep in mid 40s - 60s can lead to dementia, Alzheimer' s http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/health/not-enough-sleep-beware-of-dementia People in their middle years who do not get enough sleep could find themselves suffering from Alzheimer' s in their late 50s or 60s. Adequate shut-eye is needed to clear ' junk' in brain linked to Alzheimer' s, says sleep expert Warning as growing evidence has shown, adequate sleep is necessary to clear the accumulation of " junk" in the brain, which is linked to  Alzheimer' s disease, the most common form of dementia that can result in extreme forgetfulness.  Prof Chee, director for Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, said that a paper published in 2013 showed that sleep helps clear metabolite - the junk that develops when the brain processes the energy it needs - in adult brains. While doctors are not sure if it is the protein beta amyloid - the metabolite junk which Prof Chee said causes Alzheimer' s, they do know that there is a huge amount of these proteins in the brains of people with Alzheimer' s. As people get older, their ability to clear this junk from their brain is diminished. Sleep is important in helping to clear away these proteins, he noted, adding that the rate of clearance is about six times during sleep, compared with when one is awake. " If you are sleep-deprived, the rate of clearance of beta amyloids is reduced, so you have more junk floating around in the brain." It is like having a blocked sewage system in the brain, as the sewage piles up, there comes a time when there is so much that it does damage to the brain. Prof Chee said. Pharmaceutical companies have invested billions of dollars trying to produce medicine that can clear beta amyloids from the brain, but have yet to succeed. It takes years of accumulation for damage to be done, typically 10 to 20 years. That is why people in their middle years who do not get enough sleep could find themselves suffering from Alzheimer' s, becoming forgetful by the time they are in their late 50s or 60s. He said.  In general, Prof Chee said, people need at least 61/2 to seven hours of sleep a night, with peak performance generally associated with seven hours of sleep. Busy people often think they can get by with four to five hours of sleep a night and that it is all right as they can still manage their daily activities. People who use their brains a lot, he said, " are able to compensate better and they hide it to a point where they cannot hide it any more, then they go bang and get it very bad" ., he said. " By the time you' re diagnosed with Alzheimer' s, it' s too late." But Prof Chee admitted that more studies are needed, as it is still not known if sleeping longer on weekends, for example, can help clear the backlog of beta amyloids and, if so, to what extent. Similarly, is just having seven hours of sleep a night enough, or must it be a deep sleep? Nevertheless, Prof Chee said, it is irrefutable that having enough sleep is critical for good health. Aside from dementia, insufficient sleep is also known to raise the risk of diabetes, some cancers, heart attacks and stroke. " If you take care of your sleep, you can improve many aspects of your health," Prof Chee said. This article appeared in the print edition of The Straits Times on Oct 14, 2015. |

What' s all about green tea?, apart from being refreshing, soothing beverage &ndash served hot or cold &ndash it' s an easy  metabolism-booster, packed with antioxidants that help burn fat.  Green tea and weight loss Research shows green tea can lower blood sugar levels and reduce the absorption of fat from intestine. So, if you' re looking to shed a few pounds, you may want to consider adding a cup or two of green tea to your daily diet.  Healthy green tea for a healthy heart Most teas contain vitamins and antioxidants, but green tea goes one step beyond. Not only does it aid with weight loss, it' s also helps fight various cancers and  heart disease. The antioxidant in green tea, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), helps to speed up the recovery of heart cells and minimizes cell death after a heart attack.

Singapore should brace for long-term battle with Zika: experts Wealthy Singapore has the funds and expertise to fight Zika. One of the world' s most densely packed populations mean the mosquito-borne virus may be controlled but not eradicated, at least for years, infectious disease experts say. The tropical city-state, a major global financial and transit hub, is the only known place in Asia with active Zika transmission, according to the U.S. Centres for Disease and Prevention. In his first public remarks on the outbreak, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Thursday: " We must assume that Zika is elsewhere in Singapore." Zika can cause serious birth defects when pregnant women are infected, primarily spread by Aedes aegypti mosquito which also carries dengue, a potentially fatal virus that Singapore authorities have been battling for decades. Hundreds of specialist workers conduct island-wide inspections for mosquito breeding grounds, spray insecticide and clear stagnant water. Residents of homes where water is allowed to stagnate in flowerpots or elsewhere can be penalised. Singapore, with a " very technologically advanced health system" , was able to identify the disease " very early" , David Heymann, chairman of the WHO' s emergency committee on Zika, said on Friday. " But in other countries where it might enter at some time, that might not be the case." But almost daily downpours, average temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), large green areas and a population of more than five million people packed in a city that is half the size of Los Angeles, which has a population of 4 million, make Singapore a hospitable area for mosquitoes. " As demonstrated by the inability to eradicate dengue, the same can be said for Zika virus,  " This is a mosquito that is not found in the swamps, it' s found in the cities. Mosquito-borne disease is something that we are going to have to manage for many years to come." More than 11,000 cases of dengue have been reported in Singapore so far this year, with the authorities warning the number could exceed 30,000 by year-end, a record high. In 2013, about 22,000 cases of dengue were reported. |

HAVING SLEEPLESS NIGHT.
Insomnia can commonly be caused by: 1) Studies have suggested that electronic devices with self-luminous "backlit" displays can affect evening melatonin, which might result in delayed sleep. 2) Disruptions in circadian rhythm: jet lag, job shift changes, high altitudes, noisiness, hotness or coldness 3) Psychological issues: people with mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder or depression, as well as anxiety disorders or psychotic disorders are more likely to have insomnia. 4) Medical conditions: brain lesions and tumors, stroke, chronic pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, congestive heart failure, angina, acid-reflux disease (GERD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, sleep apnea, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, hyperthyroidism, arthritisHormones: estrogen, hormone shifts during menstruation. 5) Other factors: sleeping next to a snoring partner, parasites, genetic conditions, overactive mind, preganancy. 6) Media technology in the bedroom - researchers from the University of Helsinki, Finland, reported in the journal BMC Public Health that media technology in the bedroom disrupts sleep patterns in children. 7) They found that children with TVs, computers, video games, DVD players and mobile phones in their bedrooms slept considerably less than kids without these devices in their bedrooms. 8) In addition, a study conducted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute found that back-lit tablet computers can affect sleep patterns |

Dementia affects an estimated one in 10 people aged over 60 in Singapore, where the population of seniors is expected to double to 900,000 by 2030.For first time here, researchers capture ' live' images of the protein linked to dementiaDoctors have long known that people with Alzheimer' s disease develop clumps of a protein called amyloid in their brains - the problem was identifying this condition while they were still alive. But in a first for Singapore, researchers at the Clinical Imaging Research Centre (CIRC) have managed to capture " live" images of these protein deposits in people' s brains. This paves the way for better diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer' s disease, which is the main cause of dementia in up to seven in 10 patients. Associate Professor Christopher Chen, who was part of the team that took the first living brain scans here, said amyloid is deposited in the brain long before people start showing symptoms. These microscopic proteins are thought to stop brain cells from sending signals to each other or to be even directly toxic to the brain, although scientists do not know for sure. " If we were to base our entire concept of dementia and Alzheimer' s disease on just cognitive symptoms, we may be missing opportunities to intervene at early stages," said Prof Chen, who is from the departments of pharmacology and medicine at the National University Health System
" That is why research capabilities to track these changes in the brain are so important." Previously, scans allowed doctors to pick up changes in brain structure or activity, but not conclusively say if someone has Alzheimer' s. Being able to do so could change the way people are diagnosed and treated, said Prof Chen. For instance, it could help research teams get a better idea of who to pick for anti-amyloid clinical trials. " This kind of imaging is also useful to monitor whether treatment is effective, for us to see if the amyloid load is actually reducing," Prof Chen said. It could also help doctors understand why some people who have mild cognitive impairment - where symptoms are not bad enough to interfere with daily activities - go on to get dementia, while others do not. Prof Chen' s team at the centre, which was jointly established by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star) and the National University of Singapore, is recruiting 110 people with cognitive impairments for a study to detect the presence of amyloid in their brains. Ten of these would have already been diagnosed with Alzheimer' s disease, while the other 100 would have mild cognitive impairment. Twenty people have been recruited as of the end of last month. They will be injected with a radiopharmaceutical, which travels to the patient' s brain and binds to amyloid deposits. Then, they will undergo a positron emission tomography (PET) scan on which these deposits show up. Scans using the same technology are already being carried out in the United States and Europe. " With our radiopharmacy capability, we can radiolabel important molecules that reach targets for many applications in neuroscience, oncology, infectious diseases and cardiology," said Professor David Townsend, who is the centre' s director. This new capabilities will help his team study other molecular features in the brain.  " Amyloid is not the end of the story - it' s only the beginning." http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/health/capturing-culprit-behind-alzheimers

Gary Steinberg, the chair of neurosurgery at Stanford who led the study, said in a statement. " It was designed primarily to test the procedure' s safety," Steinberg added. " But patients improved by several standard measures, and their improvement was not only statistically significant, but clinically meaningful. Their ability to move around has recovered visibly. That' s unprecedented. At six months out from a stroke, you don' t expect to see any further recovery." Steinberg operated on 12 of the patients, with the other procedures taking place at the University of Pittsburgh. One patient, 36-year-old Sonia Olea Coontz, said that her limbs " woke up" after the procedure, according to the Stanford press release. The injection of modified adult human stem cells " into the brains of chronic stroke patients" has led to promising results, a " small" clinical trial led by researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine has shown. According to a news release from Stanford on Thursday, the procedure &ndash which involved drilling a hole into the skulls of 18 patients and then injecting stem cells into their brains using a syringe &ndash helped restore patients' motor function. The majority of the patients in the trial had their strokes " at least a full year" before the trial took place, Stanford said. The trial' s results were published online in the journal Stroke. Stroke is responsible for the deaths of around 130,000 people in the U.S. every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  |

Ripe Bananas produce a substance called TNF which is able to attack abnormal cells. You might find that Bananas would not meet the demand. The riper the bananas, the more black dots will appear on their skin, and the higher the presence of antibodies. This is the leading cause for the Japanese&rsquo s love of bananas, including their adults and young people. It has been said that taking five different kinds of fruit a day can keep yourself a distance from diseases. TNF 。 According to a research by the Japanese scientists, bananas can produce an anti-cancer substance called TNF. TNF 。 What is more important is that the riper the bananas the higher will be their anti-cancer quality. ProfessorYamasaki of the University of Tokyo conducted an experiment with animals. He compared the immune quality of various kinds of fruits &ndash banana, grape, apple, watermelon, pineapple, pears and persimmons. The result indicated bananas have the highest immune quality. They can increase the amount of white blood cells and as a result their immune capacity. At the same time, bananas can produce a substance called TNF which is able to attack abnormal cells. Professor Yamazaki also found out that the riper the bananas the more black dots will appear on their skin and the higher will be their immune quality. Being such, you are advised to eat more ripe bananas! Strangely enough, bananas will not cause white blood cell to multiply blindly. It is only when you are having insufficient white blood cells that bananas will start their mission to increase the cells. Hence experts consider that the immune quality of bananas is mild in that they will not blindly activating your immunity system under healthy condition. But in cases of old people, sick persons and those who are weak, bananas carry the effect of improving their immunity. |

Singapore&rsquo s first imported case of Zika virus infection. 48-year-oid. Permanent Resident visited the city. Sau Paolo, Brazil  from 27 Mar  - 7 May and developed a rash and fever from Tuesday (10 May), said the Ministry of Health (MOH) and National Environment Agency (NEA) in a joint statement. He was admitted to Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital on Thursday (12 May) and tested positive for the virus on Friday (13 May), whereupon he was transferred to the Communicable Diseases Centre at Tan Tock Seng Hospital for treatment and isolation to &ldquo minimise the chances of being bitten by mosquitoes and spreading the infection in the community&rdquo , the statement said. The MOH is screening the patient&rsquo s household members and has advised them to monitor their own health. The patient&rsquo s residence at Warren Estate is not considered an active dengue cluster. NEA has intensified efforts to control the Aedes mosquito population, also in the process of distributing informational leaflets and insect repellent to residents in the area. The statement also advised residents of Watten Estate, Hillcrest Arcadia, The Arcadia and Watten Hill Condominium to monitor their health. Noting that the majority of people infected with the virus do not show symptoms, the statement said it is possible that &ldquo some transmission may already have taken place&rdquo and residents have been asked to fully cooperate with the NEA and to allow its officers to inspect their premises for mosquito breeding and to conduct fumigation if necessary. The virus is transmitted via the Aedes mosquito.

This is the seventh case of Zika virus detected in Peru, and the first case of it being transmitted it from husband to wife, in the country, the Health Ministry said. Traces of the Zika virus were found in the semen and both wife and husband are in recovery stage. US health officials concluded, Zika infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly, a birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies. World Health Organization (WHO)  said there' s strong scientific consensus that Zika can also cause Guillain-Barre, a rare neurological syndrome that causes temporary paralysis in adults. The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last fall in Brazil, which has now confirmed more than 1,100 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in the mothers.
