It provides smaller companies with a well-established, regulated place to access new capital and move into new growth phases,&rdquo explains Simon Partington, head of global trading at TD Direct Investing. &ldquo Trading in AIM stocks makes up a quarter of all trading by private shareholders &ndash we find many of our customers look to AIM as a place to find that next big growth story. This growth potential could explain why AIM is often seen as a more exciting opportunity for the younger investor. A recent TD Direct Investing survey revealed that the AIM index had three-and-a-half times more 30- to 44-year-old investors than those in the 45 to 75 age group.&rdquo There are tax benefits if you invest in AIM. Most AIM shares are exempt from inheritance tax and can be included in stocks & shares ISAs. AIM stocks are also free of stamp duty. However, Mr Partington warns many companies listed on AIM don&rsquo t survive, let alone move up to the FTSE. &ldquo Investors should always do their research and understand the business they choose to invest in.
