That's exactly the type of strategy that leads to today's problem. They focus too much on their lucrative property business and simply just leave the transportation sector 'untouched'. Over the years, there is little or no attempt to innovate and streamline the transportation business to make it more efficient and improve its return. But there are limits on how far SMRT can grow its property portfolio and how much profit from prop sector can be used to cross-subsidize the lower return transportation business. As soon as the expansion on railway stops, SMRT's property portfolio stop growing too, and problem starts to show itself in their P& L statement- fall in profit! Such cross subsidization can't be kept up on long term. Now what they need to do is to start focusing on their transportation business which is also part of their core operation. The urgent strategy needed is to kickoff process management effort and hire professional consultation firm to revamp the process (ROUTES) if needed. Other longer term strategy include looking for alternative fuel to cut their fuel cost. Too bad our myopic MR ARMY GENERAL CEO is obviously not the man for the job. And he decided to do quite the opposite- hire more and more staffs. It's quite obvious that MR ARMY GENERAL CEO has no idea what went wrong in his company and what should be the company's next strategy. Up till now, his 'strategy' only entails repairing and changing parts in the tunnel, showing up in media to comfort bus drivers. Maybe the only advantage of having an army general as CEO is that he can call for reinforcement whenever he can't manage. It remained to be seen how much more reinforcement he can mobilize before he is replaced.

In 1-2 years back, SMRT was thought to be a safe stock because it is a public transportation stock. However, many who are new to trade in stock wanted defensive stock and bought in. Today, SMRT had dropped a lot in value. Never think any stock is a safe stock, just because it is a public transportation stock. Defensive stock is a mere fantasy in trading realm. |

SMRT needs to build more shops at the stations for rent-collecting . A proven strategy which has worked for many years until the cable-tie incident. |
