Asia stocks to focus on currencies, lower oil prices and South Korea political scandal Asian markets were mixed on Thursday amid thinner pre-holiday trade, after the Dow failed to reach the 20,000 mark overnight. In South Korea, the Constitutional Court of Korea will begin its first hearings on the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye, who is accused of letting a close friend meddle in state affairs and wield insider influence for personal gain. Oil prices fell on Wednesday in the U.S. after Libya said it would boost production in the coming months, and a U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) report showed a rise in U.S. crude stockpiles. U.S. crude slipped 1.5 percent to settle $ 52.49 per barrel, while global benchmark Brent finished lower by 1.6 percent to $ 54.46.

Stocks fall as Dow fails to break above elusive 20,000 mark U.S. equities fell slightly on Wednesday, with real estate lagging, as the Dow Jones industrial average failed to reach 20,000. The Dow closed about 30 points lower, with Goldman Sachs contributing the most losses, set the index about 60 points below 20,000. The blue-chips index entered the session around 25 points away from hitting the milestone mark. During Tuesday' s session, itatically came Within 13 points of reaching it. " This is what you' d expect if we were approaching a real technical level. We come very close before breaking above it," said Randy Frederick, vice president of trading and derivatives at Charles Schwab, noting that 20,000 on the Dow is more of A psychological level. As the holidays approach, investors expect trading volumes to drop significantly, which may lead to volatile swings within the market. " The trains to Manhattan have started to thin out as some market participants have already commenced their holiday vacation plans," said Jeremy Klein, Chief market strategist at FBN Securities, in a note to clients. Overseas, however, European equities traded mostly lower amid concerns over the stability of the region' s banks. Earlier, Monte dei Paschi di Siena - Italy' s third-largest lender - said it could run out of cash in two months, much faster than the originally forecast 11 months. In oil markets, U.S. crude settled 1.5 percent lower at $ 52.49 per barrel after the Energy Information Administration said crude stockpiles rose by 2.3 million barrels last week. Read more....   |

Singapore shares close lower after early rebound loses steam TRADING on Wednesday was quiet with turnover amounting to a low 1.4 billion units worth S $ 789.4 million. Rises in the three banks helped the Straits Times index into into the black intraday but the momentum was not sustained - the index closed with a net loss of 0.68 Of a point at 2,910.63. Excluding warrants, there were 168 raising versus 219 falls. not many people will want to put $ in STI when you see benefits to US markets are much more better. Furthermore, sg is very small. Previously STI is super over brought based on RSI and stochastic indicator so it is normal that it will come down for a while before another mini bull run again. I am skeptical that STI will have a super duper bull run also.

Trump may likely do more harm in the already weak global economy with its trade policy. It may spin out of control into mega trade wars. Must understand one thing, things are more affordable when it' s being manufactured in Asia than in the US. If u tax those company that operates in china Yes, you force the jobs back, but u will lose ur sales and other business too. Also look at the strength of the USD its gonna have a huge problem as it has become too expensive for others. The US has not even started its recovery and I believe recession may hit us soon by mid-2017. Everything may look perfect on paper but in real life, it  not....Every action will lead to another, it' s never easy ... especially with the current situation where china is seemed to overtake the US as the world biggest economy in the next 1-2 decade...Really who want to lose a 1.2billion market like china? lol Get ready for a rough ride in mid to end 2017 :P Enjoy the super rally now Under past trade deals, people do scratch each other back. Lower salary jobs in china and higher end jobs in the united states. Trust me its not gonna work. Also since non-OPEC countries decided to cut oil output... Oil and gas services sector will be affected... Those smaller producers may have a smaller quota. I wish everyone here a merry Christmas and a happy new year :) 2017 We will rock the market with a BANG - Rocket High    Huat ah 888   |

Straits Times Index  2,911.31   -0.06%   -1.77▼
Singapore shares close lower STI dragged down by selling of DBS, OCBC SELLING of DBS and OCBC on Tuesday meant that the Straits Times Index (STI) finished the session 1.77 points lower at 2,911.31. Turnover, which dipped below S $ 1 billion on Monday for the first time in about a month, amounted to 1.6 billion units worth S $ 977 million. Excluding warrants, there were 175 rising versus 270 falls. Two factors were said to be responsible for the drop in volume: the start of the holidays and a flight of capital out of emerging markets into the US dollar, the latter because of higher US interest rate expectations. DBS, which closed at S $ 15.13 on the eve of the US elections on Nov 7, finished at a 52-week high of S $ 18.32 on Dec 7, a gain of S $ 3.19 or 21 per cent in four weeks. On Tuesday, it fell S $ 0.15 to S $ 17.55 on volume of 5.9 million.   |

Asia Shares Gain on Strong Global Outlook A positive outlook on the economies of the U.S., Germany and Japan helped Asian traders on Tuesday look past the fallout of the attacks in Berlin and Turkey. Speaking at the University of Baltimore' s midyear commencement ceremony Monday, U.S. Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen said economic gains have created one of the strongest job markets in years for graduates in the States. " [Yellen] is really expecting the US economy to be growing strongly," said Greg McKenna, chief market strategist at AxiTrader. That in turn led to a return of risk-on trade in the market despite the attacks in Berlin and the killing of Russia' s envoy in Turkey, he said. " Markets seem to have moved on." The Bank of Japan on Tuesday raised its assessment of the economy for the first time since May 2015, closing a turbulent year on a positive note, but stood pat on monetary policy. The central said in its post-policy-meeting statement that all risks facing the economy come from offshore, including emerging economies, " especially China." Asian Indexes

Asia shares mixed Asian shares had a mixed open on Tuesday as investors await Bank of Japan' s monetary policy decision. Down under, the ASX 200 was up 0.46 percent, with broad gains across all sub-indexes except for the energy sub-index which fell 0.63 percent, as investors awaited the Reserve Bank of Australia' s December policy meeting minutes. Japan' s Nikkei 225 was down 0.14 percent in opening trade, ahead of the Bank of Japan (BOJ) monetary policy decision. The BOJ will wrap up its two-day meeting and announce its decision any time during the day. The Japanese central bank was expected to hold its negative interest rates and 10-year government bond yield target steady, as a weaker yen and positive overseas conditions Bode well for Japan' s economic outlook, a Reuters poll showed. " It' s just an overflow technically into equities and people are just trying to pick up what has not run up as much as the recent leaders," said Ilya Feygin, managing director and senior strategist at WallachBeth Capital. " The gains are smaller and Smaller. " Overseas, the Bank of Japan is set to conclude its two-day meeting on monetary policy Tuesday local time. " People will probably be looking at the ... policy decisions from central banks. Special we get Bank of Japan tonight," said Ryan Larson, head of equity trading, U.S., at RBC Global Asset Management.
