A former employee. after breaking into the centre on 26 July the alleged attacker stabbed residents at random then drove to a local police station and confessed, saying he wanted disabled people to " disappear" . The killer has been named by police as Satoshi Uematsu, a 26-year-old former employee of the centre, Tsukui Yamayuri-en. It is not clear what role he worked in. Some reports suggest he was fired from the centre, but still lived nearby. One local woman said she knew Mr Uematsu, and he had " a cheerful impression" and was " the kind of person that would greet you first" . Then a darker picture emerged of him when police revealed that in February he had taken a handwritten letter to Japan' s parliament saying he would kill 470 severely disabled people if authorised: " I want Japan to be a country where the disabled can be euthanised." |

Such attacks are extremely rare in Japan - the incident is the worst mass killing in decades. The brutal killings have shocked Japan, one of the safest countries in the world. Letter to politicians  -  Who was Japanese knife attacker? Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said it was " a very heart-wrenching and shocking incident in which many innocent people became victims" . teeth53 thot - Life working in Japanese system for caretaker stuff must be very stressful, n under stuffs.   |

Rescuers in Ecuador raced to dig out people trapped under the rubble of homes and hotels on Sunday (Apr 17), after a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that killed at least 246.
The quake reduced buildings to rubble, toppled power lines and sent terrified residents running from their homes when it struck the Pacific coast Saturday in a zone popular with tourists. Vice President Jorge Glas called it the "worst seismic movement we have faced in decades." In a news conference on Sunday he raised the toll to 246 killed and 2,527 injured. The quake, felt across Ecuador, northern Peru and southern Colombia, struck at 6.58 local time on Saturday evening (7.58am Singapore time Sunday) and lasted about a minute. It was centred around 170 kilometres northwest of the capital Quito, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. Among the worst-hit towns was the Pedernales, whose mayor Gabriel Alcivar estimated there were up to 400 more dead yet to be confirmed, many under the rubble of some 40 hotels that collapsed. "Pedernales is devastated. Buildings have fallen down, especially hotels where there are lots of tourists staying. There are lots of dead bodies," he told local media. "We need help. We need medicine, water and food to help people."

Ecuador after at least 28 people were killed by a strong 7.8-magnitude earthquake. More - At least 28 people were killed when a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck, knocking down buildings in the country' s largest city Guayaquil and cutting power in the capital Quito. A  state of emergency had been declared across the Andean nation. Vice President Jorge Glas " We have 16 people dead in the city of Portoviejo, 10 in Manta and two in the province of Guayas," in the west of the country. Police, the military and emergency services " are in a state of maximum alert." " There is considerable (structural) damage in the area near the epicenter as well as points as far away as Guayaquil," Ecuador' s Geophysical Office (IG) said. Media published photographs of a bridge and the roof of a shopping center that collapsed in the port city of Guayaquil, Ecuador' s most populous city on the Pacific coast. President Rafael Correa. " Authorities are already out evaluating damage and taking action" as needed," he said on Twitter that a national emergency committee had been activated. - Tsunami warning - With a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles), the quake struck at 2358 GMT about 173 km west-northwest of Quito and just 28 kilometers south-southeast of Muisne, according to the US Geological Survey, which monitors earthquakes worldwide. " Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 kilometers of the earthquake epicenter," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. Buildings swayed in Quito but authorities did not immediately report injuries or damageThe strong movement was felt in northern and southern parts of the Quito area, knocking out electricity in places. - Panic on the streets - Aftershocks kept rattling the country, as structural damage was reported in the coastal provinces of Manabi and Guayas. At the Guayaquil airport passengers awaiting flights dashed out of terminals when they felt the shaking. " Lights fell down from the ceiling. People were running around in shock," said Luis Quimis, 30, who was waiting to catch a flight to Quito. In northern Quito, people ran out of their homes frightened, as power lines swayed back and forth and cables danced. In fact, two earthquakes jolted the same area just 11 minutes apart, the USGS said. The first had a magnitude of 4.8 and the second of 7.8. The quake also rattled northern Peru and southern Colombia, according to authorities in those countries, although no casualties were reported. Peruvian officials however urged coastal residents to stay away from the beach. The quake came as rescuers in Japan were racing against the weather and the threat of more landslides to reach people still trapped by two big earthquakes that hit that country' s south. At least 41 people are known to have died in that double disaster, with at least six still missing -- feared buried in shattered houses or under torrents of mud.

Five years after an accident at the Fukushima nuclear plant, scientists continue to find found small amounts of radioactive material along the West Coast of North America. And  it is  say we should expect to see this in the ocean for decades to come. Off Japan coast, the situation is not yet under control, and that still leaking radiation. http://www.cnbc.com/2016/03/10/us-watches-as-fukushima-continues-to-leak-radiation.html ![]() Getty Images
A lone tree sits on the tsunami-scarred landscape in the exclusion zone, close to the devastated Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant on Feb. 26, 2016, in Namie, Fukushima, Japan.
On March 12, 2011, an earthquake triggered a tsunami that struck 700 miles of Japan coastline. It was considered the worst such disaster since Chernobyl nuclear  disaster in Russia in 1986. Fukushima radiation leakage into the sea, leading to fears in other countries that the toxins would poison marine ecosystems and fisheries, and cause cancer or other health problems for humans. U.S. scientists began receiving phone calls from concerned citizens asking them if it was safe to eat fish or swim in the ocean. While govt agencies looked for radiation in soil, air, water and the food supply, oceanographer Ken said " traditional gap" in govt agency responsibility leaves ocean radiation unstudied. Public concerned &mdash was getting phone calls from worried citizens. There had also seen a series of massive die-offs of marine life, especially sea lions. Radioactivity is everywhere, and most of it. " We are living in a radioactive world, and we are exposed to it all the time," Vetter told CNBC.

http://www.taiwannews.com.tw/etn/news_content.php?id=2881547 TAIPEI (Taiwan) &ndash As rescue efforts wound down, final death toll of the Feb-6 earthquake was put at 116 by Tainan City Govt, with one person still reported missing a week after the  6.4 tremor hit the region. A  possible passerby named as Lin Han-fei, 32. She might have been jogging in the area around the building when it came toppling down, reports said. A total of 289 people left the complex alive, with 96 of them taken to hospital. Even though the tremor struck in Kaohsiung City&rsquo s Meinong District, it was Tainan City which suffered the most, with more than ten buildings toppling and about 550 people injured. Latest finds came after city govt ordered rescue workers to start digging vertically into the remains of the collapsed Weiguan Jinlong apartment complex in the Yongkang District. Of the 116 official deaths, only two died outside the building, which is now the subject of an investigation into its construction process. According to Tainan City Mayor William Lai, the last body found on  Saturday afternoon was chairman of building&rsquo s mgt committee, Hsieh Chen-yu. Lai wondered whether he had stayed on to plan leaving as the last person.
