Enlarge Photo Undated photo shows famed physicist Albert Einstein.Physicists have found that  tiny particles called neutrinos  are making a 454-mile (730-kilometer) underground trip faster than they shoug, and now astronomers and physicists. Because the evidence of gravitational waves is captured in audio form, the finding means astronomers will now be able to hear the soundtrack of the universe and listen as violent collisions reshape the cosmos. It will be like watching from silent movies to talkies, " Until this moment, we had our eyes on the sky and we couldn' t hear the music," An all-star international team of astrophysicists used an exquisitely sensitive, $1.1 billion set of twin instruments known as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory, or LIGO, to detect a gravitational wave generated by the collision of two black holes 1.3 billion light-years from Earth. The proof consisted of what scientists called a single chirp in truth form, it sounded more like a thud &mdash that was picked up on Sept. 14. " That' s the chirp we' ve been looking for," said Louisiana State University physicist Gabriela Gonzalez, scientific spokeswoman for the LIGO team. Scientists said they hope to have a greatest hits compilation of the universe in a decade or so. Some physicists said the finding is as big a deal as the 2012 discovery of the subatomic Higgs boson, known as the " God particle." Some said this is bigger.... Rewriting the rules..?  " Einstein would be beaming."   |

TAINAN, Taiwan (AP) &mdash Taiwanese leaders and relatives held a memorial service on Friday for victims of last weekend' s earthquake as the official death toll rose to 94. President Ma Ying-jeou and president-elect Tsai Ing-wen attended the ceremony, offering flowers and shaking hands with relatives and Buddhist monks before leaving without making any public remarks. Family members lit incense and bowed before the victims' photographs, arranged in rows. Friday marks the seventh day since the earthquake and a day of special mourning, according to traditional Chinese funeral rituals. The death toll rose to 95 early Friday, according to Taiwan' s Interior Ministry, with as many as 41 people are still missing and presumed trapped under the rubble. |

TAINAN,. Before their apartment tower collapsed in a Taiwan earthquake at the weekend, a young couple living on the 14th floor had already been given a clue that the building was unsafe. But it came too late. Chen Yi-ting and her husband bought the apartment in the centre of Tainan city five years ago, having relocated from an outlying district. They had a small hiccup with the mortgage -- the first bank they approached had declined their loan application without stating why  and they found another lender and moved in with their infant daughter. Soon after, according to Chen' s mother, one of the couple' s friends, who had ties to the first bank, told them that it had a policy of refusing loans to residents of the 17-storey Wei-guan Golden Dragon Building, due to its poor construction. Now, Chen, 35, and her husband, Lin Wu-chong, 38, are in intensive-care in two separate hospitals in the southern city. She has a cracked skull and he has damaged lungs. Their 7-year-old daughter is dead. " People from outside of the town, people like them, had no idea what was going on before they moved in," Chen' s mother, Kuo Yi-chien, explained as she waited in a hospital corridor outside the intensive-care unit where her daughter is. " They did not know the building was completed by the 2nd developer after the 1st one went bust. Only to  found out after they signed the contract." The 2-decades old building is now centre rescue efforts after the 6.4 magnitude quake struck before dawn on Saturday, with at least 24 known to have died there and more than 100 still missing deep in the rubble. It was the only major high-rise building in the city of 2 million people to have completely collapsed. Its lower stories, filled with arcades of shops, pancaked on top of each other before the entire U-shaped complex toppled in on itself. Sixty-one-year-old Kuo said residents of the building had long complained of many problems before the quake, such as tiles falling from walls, malfunctioning lifts and blocked pipes. The couple paid 3.5 million Taiwan dollars ($105,000) for the apartment. " We are simple minded people. We did not think it (the initial loan refusal) might have been for some other reason," Kuo said. Tainan' s govt says the building had obtained its construction permit legally and withstood a much more destructive quake in 1999. Centred in central Taiwan, that tremor killed 2,400 people and caused damage across the island. " The city govt' s record, there was nothing wrong with it," said Wu Chong-rong, chief of Tainan Public Works Bureau. Hsu Yin-hsuan, an architect hired by Tainan' s government to investigate the collapse, said. The Wei-guan Golden Dragon building secured its construction licence in 1992 and building was completed in 1994, according to govt records. Two main firms that built the tower, Wei-guan Construction and Da Hsin Engineering, have since gone out of business. Reuters witnesses at the scene of the collapse saw large rectangular, commercial cans of cooking-oil packed inside wall cavities exposed by the damage, apparently having been used as building material. A  problem found in some of the buildings collapsed in other parts of Taiwan 1999 quake. Destruction at that time revealed that cooking-oil cans had been used as filler inside the walls of some buildings. Tainan Mayor William Lai said he had asked prosecutors to investigate and that the government had hired three teams of civil engineers to inspect the building' s structure. " When it' s completed, we' ll punish those who should be held accountable," he said. Seventy-year-old retiree Yang Shu-mei, who lived next to the building, said she had witnessed its construction and that she and other neighbours had always doubted the workmanship. " When it was being built, I looked and thought, only people from out of town would buy it. We local people would never dare to," she said.

https://sg.news.yahoo.com/6-4-magnitude-earthquake-strikes-southern-taiwan-210602384.html TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) &mdash Rescuers in the southern Taiwanese city of Tainan pulled out 221 people and three dead from a residential high-rise complex that collapsed when a shallow 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck before dawn Saturday, leaving firefighters and soldiers scrambled with ladders, cranes and other equipment to the two towers that folded like an accordion in a pile of rubble and twisted metal and extracted dazed survivors. Three people were killed, a 10-day-old infant, a 55-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man. The infant and the man were pulled out of a 17-story Wei Guan residential building and both were later declared dead. The agency said 256 people were believed to be living in 92 households. A second 16-story high-rise also collapsed in the same way and fell on its side, and more than 30 survivors have been pulled out from there. Dozens more people have been rescued or safely evacuated from a market and a seven-floor building that was badly damaged. A bank building also careened, but no injuries were reported, it said. Most people were caught asleep when temblor struck about 4 a.m. local time (2000 GMT Friday). It was located some 22 miles (36 kilometers) southeast of Yujing, and struck about 6 miles (10 kilometers) underground. As dawn broke, live Taiwanese TV showed survivors being brought gingerly from the high-rise, including an elderly woman in a neck brace and others wrapped in blankets. Firefighters were being helped from the building, and cranes were being used to search darkened parts of the structure for survivors. Newscasters said. The Taiwanese news website ET Today reported that a mother and a daughter were among the survivors pulled from the Wei Guan building and that the girl drank her urine while waiting for rescue, which came sooner than expected. The quake was felt as a lengthy, rolling shake in the capital, Taipei, on the other side of the island. Residents in mainland China also reported that the tremor was felt there. Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan,  and  a magnitude-7.6 earthquake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than 2,300 people.

Vangelia Pandeva Dimitrova also predicted the attacks on the Twin Towers, when in 1989 she said: &ldquo Horror, horror! The American brethren will fall after being attacked by the steel birds. The wolves will be howling in a bush, and innocent blood will be gushing.&rdquo (1989) Happened as predicted. The World Trade Center Towers in New York collapsed following terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 . The WTC Towers were dubbed &ldquo Twins&rdquo or &ldquo Brothers.&rdquo The terrorists drove passenger planes &ndash &ldquo the steel birds&rdquo - into the towers.

Fukushima - Fish Detected 124 Times Highly Radioactive, Cancer More Prevalent in Japan in Next 50 Years?
Fish caught in waters near the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant have been detected 124 times highly radioactive than the accepted limit, a report by Asahi Shimbun said. Japanese govt-affiliated research institute, revealed that fish called black sea bream caught near Fukushima Prefecture contained 12,400 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium. 124 times over the safety standards for foodstuffs. Fish was caught 37 kilometres south of the power plant. Close to 40 pieces of black sea bream. This particular type of fish is no longer sold at fish markets in the radiation affected region. Two other fishes contained radiation levels, 426 becquerels per kilogram and 197 becquerels per kilogram. From the Fisheries Research Agency. Japan to Perform Controlled Nuclear Meltdown, while contaminated water goes back and forth into the Pacific Ocean, most of the risk as far as fish dependency is concerned remains confined to Japan. "The concentrations of radionuclides, which are going to the Pacific or have been injected to the Pacific, by the time they get to the US, and to China and to South East Korea and so on will not be enormously high. The main risk will be to the people of Japan, and it'll be people who live along the coastline of Eastern Japan who will be greatly at risk." Mortality statistics will greatly change in Northern Japan, noting there might arise 400-800 extra cancers in Japan in the next 50-years.

IMPHAL, India: An earthquake measuring 6.7-magnitude struck northwest of Imphal in India, near the Myanmar border, on Monday (Jan 4), the US Geological Survey said.
The USGS said the quake was 57 kilometres deep, and initially reported it had struck inside Myanmar. The tremor hit at 4.35 am (7.05am, Singapore time) 33km west-northwest of the city of Imphal, capital of Manipur state, according to the USGS, revising down its earlier measurement of 6.8. In its initial impact assessment, USGS said "some casualties and damage are possible and the impact should be relatively localised". It said buildings in the area were largely "highly vulnerable to earthquake shaking". USGS issued a yellow alert for casualties and damage, with a 35 per cent likelihood of between one and 10 deaths from the tremor. India's seven northeastern states, joined to the rest of the country by a narrow sliver of land, are located in an area of frequent seismic activity. The border region is remote and sparsely populated on the Myanmar side. - Agencies/de/rw |

A ship carrying 25 tonnes of radioactive waste arrived back in Australia, met by activists who warned against becoming a nuclear dumping ground. About a dozen, some carrying signs" Don' t waste Australia" , stood near the entrance to Port Kembla south of Sydney. Environmentalists have raised concern, which left northern French port of Cherbourg in October. In  Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), the ship' s seaworthiness had been certified by French officials, said there was no credible chance of an incident during the transport. " This container is so well shielded that you could sit on it for five hours and receive no more of a radiation dose than you would on a flight to Singapore," said general manager for nuclear security Paul Jones in a statement. " It is a feat of engineering that is made from forged steel, and could withstand a drop of 9 metres, temperatures of 800 degrees Celsius or even a jet plane strike." As transport operation was underway, there was a strong police at  Port Kembla as the bulk carrier arrived. Australia sent spent nuclear fuel to France for reprocessing in the 1990s and early 2000s over four shipments, and returned for long-term storage. Reprocessing involves the removal of uranium and plutonium, stabilising the remaining substances in glass, and placing it all in a container suitable for transport and storage. The waste will initially be housed at the Lucas Heights reactor in southern Sydney, which is used for science and research, until a nuclear waste dump site is selected and built. It is expected to be trucked there from Port Kembla overnight. The government has said the nuclear waste dump site would only be used to store Australia' s radioactive waste but Greenpeace has warned that creating a new waste facility is an invitation to other countries to use Australia as a dumping ground. The group said a poll of 3,144 people last month that it had commissioned from ReachTEL suggested that most Australians opposed plans to store nuclear waste for other countries. Asked about Australia accepting nuclear waste from overseas, 18.3 percent supported it, 72.1 percent opposed it and 9.6 percent were undecided. " Most Australians rightly don' t want their country to become a nuclear waste dump for the rest of the world," Gibson said in a statement. " Nobody has yet worked out a safe way to manage long-term nuclear waste, which can remain dangerous for hundreds of thousands of years." Six sites, all hundreds of kilometres from major cities and including some Outback locations, have been shortlisted for Australia' s first nuclear waste dump. All the land owners are willing to house low to intermediate waste -- mostly by-products of nuclear medicine -- which is currently stored at about 100 different sites around the country. |
