KOTA KINABALU, June 5 &mdash Two bodies, believed to be of a local guide and a Singaporean tourist, have been recovered from Mount Kinabalu following a 6.0-magnitude quake that hit Sabah early this morning. The body of mountain guide Robbi Sappinggi, 30, was brought down at 8.25pm and will be sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for an autopsy. Sources said that Robbi was guiding a guest when the quake occurred at 7.15am. The victim sustained head injuries and was bleeding profusely, they added. The second body, believed to be that of a female Singaporean student, arrived about 8.45pm. Malaysian doctor Dr Redzlan Abdul Rahman earlier said he had checked the body of a Singaporean female and could not find a pulse. Authorities have yet to release the names and identities of the deceased. |

Powerful quake strikes off Japan no tsunami warning Associated Press
MARI YAMAGUCHI 12 minutes ago TOKYO (AP) ? A powerful earthquake struck near remote Japanese islands and shook most of the country Saturday evening, but it occurred well beneath the earth's surface and did not trigger a tsunami warning. Two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and there were no reports of major damage. The magnitude-8.5 offshore quake struck off the Ogasawara islands at a depth of 590 kilometers (370 miles), the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 7.8 and a depth of 678 kilometers (421 miles). The temblor was powerful enough to rattle most of Japan, from the southern islands of Okinawa to Hokkaido in the north. Buildings swayed in Tokyo ? about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) north of the Ogasawara islands ? and disrupted some train services in the city. About 400 houses in Saitama prefecture, just north of the capital, were without power, according to the Tokyo Electric Power Co. At Tokyo's Roppongi Hills shopping and business complex, elevators stopped soon after the earthquake struck the area, forcing hundreds of visitors to climb down the stairs. Among them were about 200 people who came to see the Star Wars exhibit on the 52nd floor. In Saitama, a woman in her 70s sustained a minor head injury when a ceramic plate fell from a cupboard, local police said. In Kawasaki, just south of Tokyo, a 56-year-old office worker fell down when the quake caught him by surprise and suffered a rib injury, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK. Yoshiyuki Sasamoto, a municipal official on Chichijima island, which is part of the Ogasawara island group, told NHK that he initially felt a mild tremor, but when he thought it was over "there was a violent shaking and I couldn't even stand on his feet." At an inn on the Ogasawara island of Hahajima, furniture shook violently, although nothing fell or broke, innkeeper Michiko Orita told NHK. "It was so frightening. The entire house shook and a Buddhist altar violently swayed like I have never experienced before," she said, adding that all her guests were safe. The meteorological agency did not issue a tsunami warning because the quake struck so far beneath the earth's surface. Deep offshore earthquakes usually do not cause tsunamis, and generally cause less damage than shallow ones. What to read next - Horrifying video: Boy drowns as friends laugh.... |

Japan Issues Highest Alert, Evacuation Warnings After Volcano " Explosively" Erupts - No Injuries ReportedFirst, earthquakes then tsunamis then household spending collapses for the 13th month in a row... and now Japan is dealing with a volcano. NHK reports that  Kuchinoerabu-jima, a volcano on Kuchinerabu Islands (off the southern-most tip of Japan) has erupted " explosively."   Officials have asked local inhabitants to  evacuate the area. As yet there are no reported injuries.
The volcano is at the southern most tip of Japan.
As Michael Snyder of The Economic Collapse blog,  you may not have noticed, but our planet is becoming increasingly unstable.  According toVolcano Discovery, 40 volcanoes around the globe are erupting right now, and only 6 of them are not along the Ring of Fire.  If that sounds like a very high number to you, that is because it is a very high number.  As I have  written about previously, there were a total of  3,542 volcanic eruptions  during the entire 20th century.  When you divide that number by 100, that gives you an average of about 35 volcanic eruptions per year.  So the number of volcanoes that are erupting right now is well above the 20th century&rsquo s average  for an entire calendar year.  And of course we are witnessing a tremendous amount of earthquake activity as well.  Nepal was just hit by the worst earthquake that it had seen  in 80 years, and scientists are telling us that the Himalayas actually dropped  by an astounding 3 feet  as a result of that one earthquake.  How much more does our planet have to shake before people start paying attention? One Japanese expert is warning that Japan &ldquo might have entered an era of great earthquakes and volcanic eruptions&ldquo , and considering the immense devastation that the great earthquake and tsunami of 2011 caused, that is a very sobering assessment. |

http://www.soshiok.com/content/taiwan-enforces-stricter-controls-japanese-food-imports#sthash.wFw4VcTH.pIVLma5g.dpuf In January, Fukushima rice passed Japan' s radiation checks for the first time since the 2011 crisis. Earlier this year. Taiwanese authorities said that more than 200 Japanese food products sold on the island originally came from radiation exposed areas near Fukushima Dai-ichi, but were mislabelled as having come from other areas. Health officials at the time indicated they discovered suspect labeling by importers of Japanese food products, including Chinese-language labels carrying different places of origin that were stuck to mask the products' domestic Japanese labels. Taiwanese media reported in March that food products, from the Japanese prefectures of Fukushima, Ibaraki, Gumma and Chiba, which were banned in Taiwan since March 2011, had crept into local supermarkets due to the mislabeling. Taiwan is the third-largest market for Japanese exports of food and agricultural, forest and fishery products.
