Is ThaiBev&rsquo s BeerCo IPO ready to take off in 2025?
 
Could Thai Beverage &rsquo s much-anticipated Singapore initial public offering (IPO) for BeerCo materialise this year?
 
In a presentation deck posted on Jan 20, ThaiBev revealed that BeerCo reported a 12% y-o-y growth in its FY2024 earnings of $214 million compared to the 25% y-o-y drop in its FY2023 earnings of $191 million, reflecting better market conditions.
 
ThaiBev also highlighted several upside factors for BeerCo including seeing a &ldquo strong momentum&rdquo for BeerCo&rsquo s sales in Thailand in 2025 from stronger demand for key brands and higher demand for Chang Beer. BeerCo outperformed the industry in Thailand in 2024 under a &ldquo more supportive macro backdrop&rdquo . The Asean region is also tipped to be the fastest-growing beer market in the world.
 
Other factors include BeerCo&rsquo s gaining market share in Vietnam&rsquo s mainstream and mass premium beer segments, seeing a clear recovery in its Vietnam operations in FY2024, robust margin expansion from higher prices, premiumisation and optimisation, as well as its expansion to the fast-growing Cambodian market.
 
ThaiBev first flagged the possibility of a spin-off BeerCo listing in early 2021 but it ended up being deferred due to &ldquo uncertain market conditions&rdquo .
 
However, during ThaiBev&rsquo s results call for the FY2024 ended Sept 30, 2024, Michael Chye, chief of ThaiBev&rsquo s beer product group told the media that BeerCo&rsquo s IPO could take place in 3Q2025 if the group decides on a share sale by December 2024. ThaiBev&rsquo s CEO Thapana Sirivadhanabhakdi also told Bloomberg in October 2024 that the group &ldquo received good interest&rdquo from potential partners.

Thailand's lower House passes bill to free up liquor production

Thailand?s House of Representatives passed a bill to promote liquor production by small entrepreneurs, a move Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said will help unshackle the monopoly in the nation?s alcoholic beverage industry and support the rural economy.

The legislation will pave the way for individual entrepreneurs, cooperatives and farmer groups among others to secure license to produce and trade all types of liquor. The bill received a near unanimous house approval with 415 lawmakers out of 420 present voting in its favour. The legislation will now be forwarded to the senate for its consideration.

Opening of micro breweries and small distilleries may eat into the market share of Thai Beverage and Boon Rawd Brewery, which dominate Thailand?s beer and spirits industries. Paetongtarn hailed the parliamentary nod for the bill, saying it will open up opportunities for farmers to sell agricultural products and spices as raw materials to the new producers.

An easier licensing regime might also be a boon for restaurants and pubs in developing niche alcoholic beverages to cater to the millions of foreign tourists visiting the country annually. Previous attempts to lower entry barriers for small producers included the removal of minimum capital requirement and production capacity in 2022.

In 2023, domestic alcoholic drinks totalled 2.97 billion litres valued at US$16.3 billion, according to a report by Krungsri Research. Beer accounted for about 55.8% of the value of total sales with spirits making up 36.1%, the report said.

Once the parliamentary approval is in place, several ministerial regulations will need to be issued before authorities can begin issuing permits, said Chanin Rungtanakiat, a member of the ruling Pheu Thai Party who chaired a lawmaker panel steering the bill.

The bill could come into effect by October if the Excise Department and related agencies issue rules in a timely manner, according to Taopiphop Limjittrakorn, a member of the opposition People?s Party, who has led a campaign to dismantle liquor monopoly.

 Alert Admin 		Agreed. Even if a small percentage of them make it, most likely would be acquired by big players. Small players enter the game hoping to gain some market shares, follow by interests from big players to buy them. End of the day back to sq one.

Those who drink will know it's not going to. Most of us open a drink menu and choose a beer we usually drink over a more pricier craft beer.
More new brand of beer might pop up but majority will die down as they cannot compete the price with big brewery .
