Wolf Money(Man vs Machine) Man vs Machine Manpower shortage in Singapore is quite acute. Almost all industries, especially in sectors like retail, f& b, security, cleaning and transportation, are facing shortages of manpower. I have a few friends running businesses in various sectors that are known to have high staff turnover. One was lamenting about the difficulties of finding new workers and retaining old staff in the retail industry. He disclosed a junior staff could earn close to 3.5k-4k with commission. I am taken aback by the revelation, given his retail shop serves an upmarket segment where walk in customers were fewer as compare to a normal retail setting. The job is not a difficult one, answering a few inquiries and doing some data entries. There are stories of him having gone through the full spectrum of training with new hires, only for the new staffs to call it quit within a week. Wolf Money(portfolio update for end April 2024)part 2 On the local front, SGX has put in a consultation paper to make submission of resolutions easier during the annual general meeting. Listed companies and board of directors need to facilitate the process, to make it a less costly and lengthy affair. There is increasing minority activism happening in local listed companies. SGX is proposing changes to the listing rule to allow resolutions to be tabled and voted on more easily, avoiding posturing, over legalistic and gatekeeping practices. Rates. It's been a bit of a rude awakening. Over the past two weeks, indices, particularly in the US, have begun to consolidate some of the gains made since October 2023. The main reasons are well known: persistent inflation is blurring visibility on the first rate cuts. At some point, of course, the indexes got caught up. And recent data doesn't help matters. First-quarter inflation came in well above expectations at +3.7% vs. 3.4%, while GDP growth was limited to +1.6% vs. a forecast of 2.5%. It's only a short step from there to rekindling fears of stagflation. The seasonally-adjusted PCE Core index for March was even more so: it came in at +2.7%, compared with +2.6% expected and 2.50% in February. Not enough to cheer investors up. Even so, bond yields fell back slightly after the statistic, having reached 4.73%. However, it will take more than this to reverse the trend, which remains well oriented in the short term above 4.43%. | ||||

I can do two things to add value to lone wolf investor. Lone bear can write about over-priced stocks due for selling, and quite hopeless penny stocks for shorting.
