Falls are a serious issue for senior elderly, especially for those over 65. The consequences are more severe and about 10% of this group get injuries such as fractures and may even become permannently disabled At least 50% of those with hip fractures, for eg, never regain their pre-fall state of health. Falling can also be a symptom of something " more sinister" , as " fall among elderly are not always accidental" . National Healthcare group' s community outreach efforts scheme has reached out to 1,154 seniors since 2009. " Families are getting smaller," said C3A chairman Gerard Ee. Buddy network for seniors called Kopi & Toast, include day trips to Johor Baru and nature walks. It started last Oct by Council for 3rd Age (C3A) - a govt funded group that promotes active-ageing. |

Workplace Safety and Health Council says ergonomic-related health issues costs the Singapore economy $3.5 billion a year. Poor ergonomics can lead to work-related musculoskeletal disorders which affects muscles, tendons and nerves. It often caused by prolonged exposure to work activities involving forceful manual exertions, awkward postures, and repetitive actions. To help firms tackle the issue, several initiatives are being rolled out. Speaking at an industry forum, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Manpower, Hawazi Daipi, a set of guidance materials has been developed to help employers apply good ergonomic practices. These include tips on how to lift heavy objects safely and good office workstation design. Mr Hawazi says companies will also get help in funding under the WorkPro scheme when they undertake workplace ergonomic redesign. An e-learning module will also be developed to provide an understanding of common ergonomic risks, and the measures to address these risks, and to get a more complete picture of the injuries caused by poor ergonomic practices, Mr Hawazi says back injuries due to ergonomic risks will be classified under work-related musculoskeletal disorders in the Workplace Safety and Health Statistics. |

http://news.xin.msn.com/en/singapore/healthcare-cooperative-to-encourage-a-more-hands-on-approach-1 A co-operative aims  at encourage S' poreans to take a more hands-on approach in taking care of their health has been launched. Named The Good Life, the co-op is based on a tripartite model, comprising healthcare providers, insurance companies and the public. It' s led by Dr Carol Tan, a geriatrician from Rophi Clinic at Mount Elizabeth Novena Specialist Centre. She says in light of Singapore' s ageing population and rising healthcare costs, there' s a need to relook our healthcare approach, so as not to be over-dependent on public resources. She says the idea of long-term, preventive healthcare is something Singaporeans are not very used to. Singaporeans tend to be rather reactive in terms of healthcare - that is, they wait for their medical problems to worsen till it becomes unbearable, before looking for medical treatment. Singaporeans also tend to doctor-hop a lot.   |

Singapore may be the world' s most expensive city for expatriates. The  cost of living for average resident, S' poreans and permanent residents, is much lower than many other global cities such as Hong Kong. A study by Asia Competitiveness Institute (ACI) showed that S' pore is ranked 60th among 109 major cities for the average residents' cost of living. And the institute said govt subsidies played a big part in keeping costs down. The ACI found cost of living for average changed little between 2005 and 2012. S' pore came in at 60th among 109 major cities for average residents' cost of living in 2012. It was ranked 61st in 2005. The latest ranking makes it cheaper than cities like Hong Kong, which was ranked 58, and Western capitals like New York, Paris and London. Presenting its findings, ACI said overall cost of living for average residents in S' pore in 2012 was 35% lower compared to New York. This was largely due to lower costs of housing, healthcare and education in Singapore. ACI found that housing in S' pore for average residents was 27% cheaper than New York, medical cost was 75% lower and education was 73% lower.
