Flu-like heart infection that can kill http://sg.news.yahoo.com/blogs/fit-to-post-health/flu-heart-infection-kill-111230356.html Experience chest pain, shortness of breath or swollen feet and ankles following a bout of flu or viral infection, you should see a doctor to rule out a potentially fatal heart condition called viral myocarditis. People with mild viral myocarditis may feel no symptoms at all or they may experience a heart attack or severe heart failure (dilated cardiomyopathy) as the condition worsens. ?Viral myocarditis may be the cause for a significant number of unexplained sudden deaths in seemingly healthy young people,? says Associate Professor Lim Chong Hee, Senior Consultant, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS), a member of the SingHealth Group. Patients with viral myocarditis may be mistaken as having the flu because of the initial flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue and heart palpitations, adds Assoc Prof Lim, who is also Director of the Heart and Lung Transplant Programme at NHCS. Women who get viral myocarditis in their final month of pregnancy can develop a weakened heart condition called peripartum cardiomyopathy. |

SINGAPORE] About 450,000 Singaporeans aged 65 or older this year will benefit from the new Pioneer Generation Package, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong yesterday.
These seniors will get help to pay for their MediShield Life insurance premiums, get subsidies for outpatient treatment and enjoy extra top-ups into their Medisave accounts every year - for the rest of their lives. More assistance will be given to those who are older, he said during a tribute party held at the Istana to honour the country's pioneers. In his speech, Mr Lee thanked this generation of Singaporeans for their hard work and contributions over the years as they helped build the country into what it is today. Sharing details of the qualifying criteria for the package, Mr Lee said that these pioneers have to be born on or before Dec 31, 1949, and who became Singapore citizens by Dec 31, 1986. Those who make the cut will be informed in due course. He explained that, with these parameters, a pioneer today would have been about 16 years or older at independence back in 1965. Many people in those days started working in their late-teens. Also included is Singapore's first batch of national servicemen, who were called up in 1967. |

There is a growing field of research studying dogs and disease detection. Because dogs' sense of smell is so sharp-1000 to 100,000 times more acute than human's, depending on the breed-they are able to detect subtle chemical changes in the breath, blood, and urine that can be indicators of disease. They can sniff out the volatile compounds in the body that may indicate the presence of cancerous cells or alert owners with diabetes to an oncoming hypoglycemic episode. She adds, " If the dog had come a month later or of we hadn't taken him, I don't know what would have happened." Lifesaving Dog Sniffs Out Girl's Disease, Even in Operating Room Papazin alerted her physician and started treatment. To combat the aggressive form of breast cancer she was suffering, she had a double mastectomy and began chemotherapy. While she is still on chemo, Papazian says she is now cancer-free and feeling " very healthy." Are you sitting down? Your heart failure risk is higher http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/01/21/sitting-disease-heart-failure/4661431/ Both sitting too much ? sometimes called sitting disease ? and exercising too little may increase the chance of heart failure, a new study suggests. The risk of heart failure was more than double for men who sat for at least five hours a day outside of work and didn't exercise very much compared with men who were physically active and sat for less than two hours a day, says the study's lead author, Deborah Rohm Young, a senior scientist at Kaiser Permanente in Pasadena, Calif. Heart failure is when the heart muscle isn't pumping blood adequately, but it doesn't mean the heart stops beating.   ...

Two Citibank employees working on the 22nd floor of its Asia Square office have been diagnosed with Influenza A (H1N1), and another eight are suspected to be infected with the virus, the bank said in an email sent to its staff on Tuesday.   SINGAPORE: Two Citibank employees working on the 22nd floor of its Asia Square office have been diagnosed with Influenza A (H1N1), and another eight are suspected to be infected with the virus, the bank said in an email sent to its staff on Tuesday. In the email, Citibank said the affected staff were on medical leave, while the suspected cases were sent home to see a doctor. A Citi Singapore spokesperson told TODAY: ?We have informed all employees on the precautions they should take and have distributed face masks and antiseptic wipes to all staff sitting on the same floor as those who are affected.? The bank added that it has a preparedness plan for various emergency scenarios, as well as Continuity of Business teams. In October, eight children at a childcare centre with an enrolment of 56 were reported to have fallen sick with influenza, while another 10 had influenza-like symptoms. Two children were admitted for observation and discharged two days later, while the other 16 self-medicated or received outpatient medical treatment. A Ministry of Health spokesperson said on Tuesday that influenza is generally a mild illness that results in full recovery and the public should not be alarmed. There are three seasonal influenza strains that circulate year-round here -- Influenza A (H1N1), Influenza A (H3N2) and Influenza B. There has been no evidence to suggest an increase in virulence of the H1N1 virus, the spokesperson said.    |

http://www.naturalnews.com/033498_SerratioPeptidase_inflammation.html (NaturalNews) Proteolytic enzymes are specific enzymes that metabolize protein. These enzymes are naturally produced by the human body and other living organisms and help carry out essential functions. Supplementing with these enzymes has shown to have a favorable anti-inflammatory effect on the tissues of the body. A unique enzyme named serratiopeptidase is now emerging as one of the most potent anti-inflammatory supplements. Serratiopeptidase is an enzyme isolated from a non-pathogenic bacteria called enterobacteria Serratia E15. This enzyme makes its inhabitants in the intestine of the silkworm. Silkworms go through a transformational process within a cocoon that turns them into moths. It is this specific enzyme that is used by the silkworm to dissolve the cocoon and reemerge as a moth. Serratiopeptidase has powerful anti-inflammatory properties and is particularly useful for post-traumatic swelling, fibrocystic breast disease and bronchitis. It is able to digest dead tissue, blood clots, cysts, and arterial plaques. Clinical studies have shown it to be effective at reducing swelling and edema and metabolizing scar tissue in the body. A 2003 study found that 30mg of serratiopeptidase was effective at loosening and reducing mucous build-up in respiratory pathways. This was credited to its ability to reduce the neutrophil white blood cell numbers and to improve the viscoelasticity of the sputum in patients with chronic airway disease. Serratiopeptidase is also renowned for its ability to reduce pain by blocking the release of pain-inducing molecules from inflamed tissues. There are no known side effects with this. The most common pain-reducing aids are aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen, which are called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID`s). These drugs are known to deplete renal and hepatic glutathione and to deplete the body of critical B vitamins and trace minerals leading to stomach, kidney, liver and heart problems. A 2008 study compared Serratiopeptidase and its anti-inflammatory activity with 2 human pancreatic proteolytic enzymes (trypsin and chymotrypsin) and aspirin. Although all groups were effective at reducing inflammation, serratiopeptidase was the most effective. (6) It was also proven to be effective at reducing swelling and pain intensity in individuals with carpel tunnel and sprained ankles.(7-8) Other studies have shown similar anti-inflammatory effects after oral surgery was performed.(9) A 2006 study looked at the role serratiopeptidase has on improving immunity. This experimental animal study involved implanting a biofilm-forming bacteria (Staphylococcus epidermis) into a group of rats. The group given serratiopeptidase was highly effective at eliminating this infection. The researchers credited the antibiofilm properties of this specific enzyme as being the key factor. It is also hypothesized that this enzyme may be used to make antibodies more effective. (10) Serratiopeptidase has been used in Europe and Asia for over 30 years. It is still relatively new in the United States and Canada. Most experts agree that......Serratiopeptidase appears to be a major player in anti-inflammatory protocols of the future. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/syria-polio-outbreak-may-threaten-europe-experts-warn-023526584.html Risk to middle East and  Europe from a re-emergence of polio in Syria was partly due to the type of vaccine generally used in regions that have not had the disease for many years. Polio, caused by a virus transmitted via contaminated food or water, was confirmed among children in northeast Syria last mth - 1st in 14 years. World Health Organisation (WHO) said the virus probably spread from Pakistan - one of  3 countries where polio is still endemic - and warned that Syria's outbreak posed a threat to millions of children across the Middle East and EU.. Polio passes easily from person to person, it can  spread rapidly among children, especially in unsanitary conditions endured by displaced people in Syria or in crowded refugee camps in neighbouring countries. The disease invades the nervous system and can cause irreversible paralysis within hours - WHO's repeated warning is that as long as any single child remains infected with polio, children everywhere are at risk |

http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2013-11/afst-asu110813.phpScientists at A*STAR have discovered an enzyme, Wip1 phosphatase.Discovery could eradicate cancers more effectively n prevent relapses.1. Wip1 phosphatase, as a potential target to weed out the progression of cancer. Although studies in the past have revealed that this enzyme plays a critical role in regulating the budding of tumours, scientists have for the first time unearthed a mechanism for its mode of action. 2. Conducted by Dr Dmitry Bulavin and his team at A*STAR's Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), with their findings published in 14 Oct 2013 issue of the prestigious scientific journal, Cancer Cell. 3. The team discovered that Wip1 phosphatase is a key factor that causes point mutations to sprout in human cancers. These types of mutations stem from errors that are made during DNA replication in the body, causing one base-pair in the DNA sequence to be altered. 4. These mutations can cause cancers to take root, or to become resilient to treatment. By using drugs to inhibit the action of Wip1 phosphatase, cancer growth can be stunted and tumours can be cured without developing resistance.  It is a ground-breaking finding that sheds light on how mutations in cancer can potentially be wiped out with drugs, allowing cancers to be treated and eliminated effectively, preventing relapses of tumour growth. 5. Dr Dmitry Bulavin said, " Our work on Wip1 phosphatase for over a decade has now revealed several key features of this molecule. Current findings strongly support the use of an anti-Wip1 drug for cancer treatment in order to reduce a high frequency of mutations in the genome, which is one of the main drivers of tumour relapses." 6. Prof Hong Wan Jin, Exe Director of IMCB, said, " Dmitry has been the pioneering driver in the mechanistic study of Wip1 phosphatase, and this discovery is monumental in providing novel understanding on the role of Wip1 in cancer at the genomic and systems levels. I am confident that his team at IMCB can further their work in cancer research to offer new approaches for potential drugs against this target."
