UMS Holdings

Between May 16 and 17, UMS Holdings : 558 0% chairman and CEO Andy Luong acquired 1,833,600 shares at an average price of S$1.07 per share. This increased his deemed interest in the precision engineering group from 14.99 per cent to 15.25 per cent.

The core business of UMS Holdings is the manufacture of precision machining components, assembly and integration of equipment modules for semiconductor equipment manufacturers. This segment accounted of 87 per cent of group revenue in FY23 (ended Dec 31), and 85 per cent of group revenue in Q1FY24. Its overall Q1FY24 revenue declined 33 per cent from Q1FY23, and fell 27 per cent from Q4FY23.

During Q1FY24, the group took firm action to drive revenue, new customer acquisitions and working capital improvements to enhance its ability to capture new growth opportunities.

The group noted that this is in line with global production resources continuing to shift their focus towards South-east Asia, particularly Malaysia, where UMS Holdings has grown its presence with the successful completion of its 300,000 square foot factory in Penang.

The conspiracy theory speculation that those who got shares in the placement sold out ahead of the fall is clearly misplaced. Anyone who knows how markets work will realise that the reality is that those who bought the shares would still have been holding them when it happened.

UMS and the banks that helped them on the placement would not have done the placement had they seen the share price drop coming because they would have opened themselves up to legal and reputational risk given they had some price sensitive information about Q1 already.

The drop therefore was clearly a bout of panic selling by uninformed sellers - unfortunately there are too many uninformed investors on SGX that are just sheep to the slaughter. Selling when they should be buying and vice versa.

You really have to question analysis like this. Is it really the case that the new information disclosed in the Q1 update merited a reduction in valuation of almost 40%? If so that implies they were pretty poorly informed previously.

Maybank downgrades UMS to &lsquo sell&rsquo , cites &lsquo gloomy&rsquo near-term outlook

Research house lowers FY2024 net profit estimates by 37.7 per cent

MAYBANK Securities downgraded its call on UMS : 558 -6.31% to &ldquo sell&rdquo from &ldquo hold&rdquo while reducing its price target to S$0.88 from S$1.41 previously, as it believes the semiconductor company&rsquo s near-term earnings are &ldquo likely to remain weak&rdquo .

In a report on Monday (May 13), analyst Jarick Seet noted how an earlier view that UMS had been losing market share with its key customer Applied Materials was &ldquo validated&rdquo after the company&rsquo s manager guided that market share had decreased to between 50 and 70 per cent, from 75 per cent previously.

&ldquo While we expected a weak Q1 FY2024, we did not expect the outlook to be gloomy,&rdquo he added.

The research house has lowered its FY2024 profit after tax and minority interest estimates by 37.7 per cent, and by 35.3 per cent for FY2025.

Seet nonetheless said he sees potential upside to UMS&rsquo anticipated revenue contributions from its new customer in FY2024, should the semiconductor sector pick up in H2 of the fiscal year.

Shares of UMS were trading S$0.06 or 5.4 per cent lower at S$1.05 as at 10.20 am on Tuesday.

Maybank&rsquo s downgrade on the semiconductor company comes after it reported a 44 per cent decline in net profit to S$9.8 million for the first quarter of FY2024.

Seet observed that the weak performance was due to its key customer&rsquo s inventory build-up in Q4 FY2023, with semiconductor integrated systems being the main contributor to UMS&rsquo financial underperformance.

He also noted that management guidance for Q2 to be weak would be &ldquo similar&rdquo to Q1 FY2024.

In his view, FY2024 is &ldquo likely to be a weaker year&rdquo than FY2023.

Responding separately to queries from The Business Times regarding an overall sell-off in semiconductor stocks on Monday, Seet said he remained bullish on Singapore&rsquo s semiconductor industry, but &ldquo only on selected players like Frencken : E28 +3.79%&rdquo .
