Three years after Japan tsunami, suspected bits of debris arrive on Washington shores https://sg.news.yahoo.com/three-years-after-japan-tsunami--debris-washes-up-on-washington-shores-143838169.html?vp=1 View Photo  Taken in Jan  2014, and provided by Washington State Ecology Department
Southern Washington, approximately 4,500 miles across Pacific Ocean, debris from tsunami is washing ashore, KING-5 in Seattle reports. Experts have yet to confirm that the debris, which includes small fishing boats, foam blocks, and water bottles, is all a direct result of the tsunami. George Hill, a tow-truck driver, said many of the water bottles and assorted items of trash appear to have originated in Japan. He  told KING-5 there are portions of the beach that look like a dump truck just emptied a huge pile of trash. Washington state has been keeping track of the debris that is confirmed from the tsunami. Items include boats, portions of docks, and volleyballs that have all washed ashore over the past three years. Alaska, California, and Oregon have also been monitoring their coasts. The most recent waves of debris began to arrive on beaches on Friday, according to WNEM.com. Authorities are investigating to see if the boats and other items can be identified. They will also be checked for invasive species. In addition to mass destruction and thousands of deaths, the earthquake that caused tsunami altered the spin of the planet, according to reports. |

" I believed I, as the prime minister, certainly had to take responsibility and resign."
Sunday - South Korea' s prime minister resigned, blaming corruption and " deep-rooted evil" for the sinking of a passenger ferry that left 300 people dead or missing, as anger grows over the bungled response to the tragedy.
Chung Hong-Won admitted not been up to the task of overseeing rescue operations after the Sewol capsized with 476 people -- many of them schoolchildren -- on board.
" I offer my apology for having been unable to prevent this accident from happening and unable to properly respond to it afterwards."
Parents and relatives of the missing and the dead have blasted the response to the sinking, saying delays in launching the rescue had cost lives.
There has also been rage over perceived corruption and lax safety standards that may have led to the disaster, with claims that the ferry was overloaded and the passenger list was inaccurate and incomplete.
" Looking at latest accident I came to a painful realisation that there is too much deep-rooted evil and corruption in our society," Chung said.

Investigators will be looking at why passengers were ordered to stay in their cabins and seats for up to 40 minutes after the ferry ran into trouble.
Transcript shows ferry captain delayed evacuation
Tracking data from the Maritime Ministry showed that the ferry made a sharp turn just before sending its first distress signal.
Some experts believe a tight turn could have dislodged the heavy cargo manifest -- including more than 150 vehicles -- and destabilised the vessel, causing it to list heavily and then capsize.
But others suggested the turn might have been caused by a collision with a rock or other submerged object.
Chief prosecutor Lee Seong-Yoon stressed there was " no limit" to the range of the investigation.
" We will make sure... those responsible are sternly held accountable," Lee said.
As well as the cause of the disaster,
Furious relatives believe many more people would have escaped if they had reached evacuation points before the ship listed sharply and water started flooding in.
Newspaper editorials were scathing with the Dong-A Ilbo daily calling the rescue response " ludicrous" .
" We have the world' s finest shipbuilding industry in the 21st century, but our mindset is in the 19th century," the newspaper said.

https://sg.news.yahoo.com/third-officer-command-korea-ferry-capsized-prosecutors-015445207.html
The captain was not at the helm of the South Korean ferry that capsized two days ago, as anger spread over stalled rescue efforts. More than 48 hours after the 6,825-tonne Sewol suddenly listed and then sank.
A  small army of more than 500 exhausted divers -- battling powerful currents -- have yet to obtain any real access to the ferry' s interior as two divers managed to partially pry open a door on the side of the ship, " Visibility is almost non-existent. You can hardly see your hand in front of you face," As dive teams worked on accessing the ferry, two divers bored holes in the hull and began injecting oxygen into the ship, the coastguard said.
The confirmed death toll stood at 28, but the focus of concern remained the 268 people still unaccounted for -- hundreds of them children on a high school outing to the southern resort island of Jeju.
Of the 475 people on board when the Sewol capsized, 179 were rescued, but no new survivors have been found since Wednesday.
- No salvage before rescue - Three giant, floating cranes reached the disaster site, but regional coastguard commander Kim Soo-Hyun stressed they would not begin lifting the multi-deck ferry until they were sure there were no survivors inside.
There were 352 students on board and for the parents of those who were not rescued there was bitter resentment at what they saw as the inadequacy of the official response.
" It' s been two days but no one has been brought out alive," complained Lee Yong-Gi, whose son was among the missing students.
" I firmly believe that the kids are alive. We need to rescue them as soon as possible. But officials are dragging their feet," Lee told AFP. Another father accused the authorities of indifference and deception in an appeal broadcast live on television.
" The govt lied yesterday," speaking from a podium in a Jindo gymnasium where hundreds of blanket-wrapped relatives have been sleeping on the floor since the tragedy unfolded.
" Everyone, is this the reality of South Korea? We plead once more, please save our children," he said.
A coastguard official trying to brief the relatives was pushed and slapped around the face.
The initial public backlash has centred on the captain, Lee Joon-Seok, and his 28 crew, most of whom survived the disaster.
State prosecutors said preliminary investigations showed the third officer was at the helm of the ferry.

https://ph.news.yahoo.com/china-says-massive-area-soil-polluted-105053559.html
Huge area of China' s soil covering more than twice the size of Spain is polluted, the govt said, a survey previously kept secret.
Of 6.3 million sq kilometres (2.4 million sq miles) of soil surveyed -- roughly two thirds of China' s total area -- 16.1% is thought to be polluted. The study, which appeared on its website.
" National soil pollution situation is not positive," adding that more than 19% of the farmland which was surveyed is polluted.
Last year, its soil pollution survey  is a state secret and refused to release the results, a move which incensed environmental campaigners. The govt has come under increasing pressure in recent years to take action to improve the environment, with large parts of the country repeatedly blanketed in thick smog and waterways and land polluted.
In response to public pressure, China has released more accurate data about air pollution.
More than 80% of the soil pollution was caused by " non-organic contaminants" , The survey was carried out over an eight-year period from 2005 to 2013. The ministry said in its report
The ministry last year acknowledged the existence of " cancer villages" , years after Chinese media first reported on more than 100 polluted rural areas with a higher incidence of the disease.
Premier Li Keqiang announced in March  that Beijing was " declaring war" on pollution, as he sought to address public concerns on issues ranging from smog to food safety, but experts warn that implementation will be the key.

Ring of Fire is an area where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific basin. In a 40,000 km (25,000 mi) horseshoe shape, it is associated with a nearly continuous series of oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts and/or plate movements. It has 452 volcanoes and is home to over 75% of the world' s active and dormant volcanoes. It is sometimes called the circum-Pacific belt or the circum-Pacific seismic belt.
About 90% of the world' s earthquakes and 81% of the world' s largest earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire.

https://sg.news.yahoo.com/powerful-quake-hits-chile-tsunami-warning-001554740.html
A powerful 8.2-magnitude earthquake hit northern Chile' s Pacific coast Tuesday, killing at least six people as tsunami waves of more than two meters lashed the shore. The quake sent panicked residents pouring into the streets, with more than 900,000 people along Chile' s coast heeding govt orders to evacuate their homes and seek higher ground.
President Michelle Bachelet declared parts of northern Chile to be disaster zones and said soldiers will be dispatched to the areas to prevent looting and disorder from breaking out as they did after a deadly 8.8-magnitude quake in 2010. More than 500 people died and $30 billion in damage was wrought in that quake.
In the city of Iquique, closest to the epicenter, some 300 prisoners escaped from a jail amid the chaos triggered by the new tremor. A total of 39 of them have been recaptured, the Interior Ministry said.
Quake struck at 8:46 pm at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles), 83 kilometers from Iquique on Chile' s northern coast, the United States Geological Survey said. Chile' s National Seismological Center placed it four times deeper, however. The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert along more than 3,000 miles (4,800 kilometers) of coastline in South and Central America. Waves of more than six feet (two meters) had been generated.
- Power cuts, buildings burn - Chilean, with at least six people were killed, three seriously injured, as he lifted the tsunami alert. The impact of the offshore quake went beyond Chile, with Ecuadoran and Peruvian authorities also issuing warnings. " Everyone along our coast should be alert and ready," Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa said on Twitter.
Similar warnings were issued in a ripple effect up the Pacific coast of South America and into Central America. But about 10 hours after the two-minute quake, the Chilean govt lifted what remained of a nationwide tsunami alert. Some fires broke out, roads were damaged and power was knocked out in the northern city of Arica, although there was no widespread destruction from the latest mighty quake in one of the world' s most seismically active countries, said the disaster relief agency ONEMI.
" The street lights were busted, people ran terrified. After the earthquake there were several aftershocks," Veronica Castillo told AFP from Arica, 1,000 miles north of the capital Santiago. So far there have been 17 aftershocks and there will be more in coming days, according to Sergio Barrientos of the seismological service at the University of Chile.
Tremors were felt as far inland as Bolivia, while across the Pacific in Indonesia, officials said that the Asian nation could be hit by waves of up to half a meter from the Chilean quake. In Peru, the southern coastal area was also put on alert while roads along the coast were closed. " This is a warning for the population to take all precautionary measures," AFP.
Honduras in Central America also declared a tsunami alert, but Nicaragua called off one it had declared earlier. Pacific Tsunami Warning Ctr also issued a warning for Colombia n Panama, and " watches" for at least  6 other countries.
On Sunday, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck, followed by at least two moderate aftershocks.

Old news, but is a necessary to share such information...
http://rt.com/usa/usa-company-radioactive-fukushima-workers/
US based recruitment firm, is seeking qualified workers able to travel international who boast a family willing to let them work in highly radioactive locations, namely the Fukushima reactor zone.
Sub-contractors for the General Electric-Hitachi US nuclear plant contacted Bartlett Nuclear specifically to recruit workers willing to come and help those in Japan. Many Japanese workers already working at Fukushima feel they may die from the radiation they have been exposed to, possibly within weeks and it has been revealed that it could take over 100 years to ensure the fuel rods reach safe levels.
The Japanese workers have mainly accepted their fates, some explaining if they die it is because they persevered in an effort to save their nation from greater nuclear catastrophe.
Japan is now calling on the international community for more help. In addition to US teams, American scientists are expected to work with Japanese scientists on ways to move forward from the disaster. A French team is working to find a solution on how to dispose of the contaminated water used to cool the fuel rods.
The US military is also expected to work with Japanese forces to search for more bodies, utilizing aerial technology to search along river beds, flood plains and coastlines.
So far at least 11,500 people have been confirmed dead while 16,400 remain missing. Seeking to find those who are missing is an increasingly difficult task, as radiation leaks continue and the future of the reactor remains elusive.
As new teams begin to form, from the US and in Japan, the reality of how intense the radiation is begins to set in.

Los Angeles after a 4.4-magnitude earthquake jolted the area on March 17, 2014. Eleven days later, the Los Angeles area was rocked by another earthquake measuring 5.1 magnitude. (AFP/Robyn Beck)
On Friday. A shallow 5.1-magnitude earthquake rocked the Los Angeles area. While no injuries were reported, objects fell from shelves and furniture toppled over, according to photos posted on social media, while TV pictures showed a car flipped over by a rockslide.
The quake, which hit at 9:10 pm, was the biggest in the LA area for  6-years, since a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck nearby Chino Hills in 2008. Friday' s quake came after one measuring 4.4 earlier this month. Quake' s epicentre was near La Habra, about 22 miles (35 kilometres) southeast of downtown Los Angeles, and could be felt across the LA metropolitan area, including in Hollywood. Disneyland shut down rides as a precaution, according to NBC4 television.
The quake, which lasted up to half a minute, was preceded and followed by a number of smaller ones.
California has long braced for the " Big One." Seismologists say, quake capable of causing widespread destruction is 99% certain to hit California in the next 30 years.
The western US state is on the so-called Ring of Fire, which circles the Pacific and has produced a number of devastating quakes including Japan' s March 2011 quake-tsunami, which killed thousands of people.
A 6.7-magnitude earthquake in 1994 in Northridge, north west of LA, left at least 60 people dead and caused an estimated US$10 billion damage, while a 6.9 quake in San Francisco in 1989 claimed the lives of 67 people.
