Creative' s Super X-Fi to blow away VR and AR gamers: DBSBy:

SINGAPORE (Mar 1): DBS Vickers analyst Sachin Mittal says he is impressed with the 3D sounds produced through headphones by Creative Technology' s Super X-Fi dongle. See: Creative Technology skyrockets 147% on ' holy grail' Creative' s 3D audio provides the perception of spatial sound which humans hear in real life. Expected to be launched in mid-2018 at a retail price of US$150 ($199), the Super X-Fi dongle is compatible with headsets, smartphone or consumer entertainment devices. Creative will also launch a free app targeted to reach 50 million customers in two years. In addition, the company will also license the technology to other players. In a Thursday unrated report, Mittal says games and movies featuring Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) is expected to drive demand of Super X-Fi from premium headset users. " While some players claim to provide 3D audio experiences via headphones, none of them features the plug-and-play capabilities and the customised listening experience of Super X-Fi in our knowledge," says Mittal. " We assume that Super X-Fi would be able to capture a 0.5% market share of the global headset market in FY20 ended June, resulting in sales of US$232 million," says Mittal. DBS has a fair value of $5.56 per share and $8.10 per share under its conservative base-case scenario and bull-case fair assuming 0.8% market share, respectively. As at 2.40pm, shares in Creative are trading at $4.02.

Company visit: Creative Technology (Deutsche Bank 28/2/2018)   We met with the CEO of Creative Technologies (CREAF SP, unrated) for a presentation and demo of its upcoming audio technology Super X-Fi. We also discussed the product launch timeline and monetization strategy. The company had showcased the technology at CES 2018 to critical acclaim and won the Best of CES 2018 Award from the AVS Forum. Essentially, the technology delivers the &lsquo soundstage&rsquo of an external speaker system into a headphone. We participated in the demo (details below) and were impressed by the product.   Technology: Personalization comes audio   The starting point is an &lsquo audio profile&rsquo which contains the info on how the subject would perceive the sound if he/she were to hear from external speakers. The algorithm uses audio profile data and the info on headphone model to replicate the same in real time. The company is able to map people into one of its numerous audio profile templates by taking three pictures (left ear, right ear & face) via its app. For a &lsquo custom profile&rsquo , the subject would need to sit through a 2-3 minute &lsquo audio test&rsquo with in-ear microphones.   Product formats and launch pipeline   Creative indicated a $100m cumulative R& D spend to develop the technology. The company will launch with a free SXFi app in 2Q18. This will be followed by the dongle in 3Q18 at a price of $150 and SXFI wireless headphones in 4Q18. The company will also activate a &lsquo Certified SXFi&rsquo headphone program to create leverage for its licensing framework. Our demo used the prototype dongle which contain a custom-built chip for audio-processing and thus allows a normal headphone to deliver SXFi.   Monetization strategy &ndash Combination of ad-funded and licensing revenues   The company is aiming for 50m app downloads over two years and expects the free app to drive consumer awareness for SFXi and create a valuable user base of audio enthusiasts. The launch of dongle and wireless headphones are expected to further expand the consumer base. Eventually, Creative expects the leverage consumer demand to become a &lsquo defacto audio standard&rsquo and license its technology to manufacturers of headphones, mobile-phone and other consumer audio products. The CEO indicated that this is conscious break from Creative&rsquo s current business model which primarily consists to manufacturing the hardware (sound cards etc) with its embedded audio technologies to generate revenues. A licensing model is significantly valuable if it succeeds however it is fraught with risks as consumer electronics companies would loathe to embed a propriety protocol (and pay royalties) unless it provides a product differentiation or higher pricing. Content has emerged as competitive lever for telcos and a key driver of subscriber retention and data growth Creative&rsquo s technology has the potential to enhance the user experience on mobile phones. |

Some facts on float size of Creative: Total number of shares 70,133,649 Sim Wong Hoo 27,270,652 (33.05%) Free float 42,8 mil (though likely to be smaller than that because some are long term holders) So it is quite easy for an interested third party to build up a 5% stake by just buying 3.5 mil shares which would be just $14 mil. If the company can deliver the SuperX-fi as envisaged, there will be many would be interested third parties predators. |

I was tempted to short a bit like 2000 shares at 4.16 but didn' t have the balls to do it haha... shorting is not my nature. but now indeed dropped back to 4.04
