How can I find good semiconductor stocks?



When looking for the best semiconductor stocks to invest in, consider four key areas.

1. Sustainable revenue growth



Investors generally prefer companies that can grow sales over time, but revenue growth matters even more for semiconductor stocks.

Many companies in this sector struggle to break out of the industry&rsquo s up-and-down cycles. Hardware, such as computer chips, tends to get commoditized over time. If one new market is growing quickly, other firms pile in with similar products supply swells, prices fall, and sales shrink. If a company isn&rsquo t constantly innovating and finding new outlets for its sales, the cycle could wind up being a roller-coaster ride ending nowhere.

2. Higher-than-average profit margins



Sales don&rsquo t help much if a company can&rsquo t hold on to that cash on the bottom line. Think of profit margins as a net a company uses when hunting dollars. The higher the margins, the smaller the holes in the net, and the more dollars a company holds on to.

Investing in semiconductor businesses with tightly woven nets is important. The more dollars a company holds on to, the greater its ability to reinvest in research and improving its operations to ensure that its nets don&rsquo t spring any large holes.

So look at a semiconductor company&rsquo s gross profit (its revenue minus the cost of producing its products) and operating profit (gross profit minus other fixed and variable expenses like staff, research and development, and corporate overhead). The higher the gross and operating profit margins, the better, especially relative to a company&rsquo s closest peers.

3. Solid returns on invested capital



A company&rsquo s returns on its investments can show you how well it&rsquo s able to innovate and continuously capture more dollars over time. Look at a semiconductor company&rsquo s return on invested capital. Higher returns mean the company&rsquo s better at innovating in the right places and improving operations to increase efficiency and the bottom line.

4. Strong balance sheets



Finally, manufacturing tends to be expensive, so it&rsquo s important to note how semiconductor businesses have been using their resources to expand. Check how much cash and debt a semiconductor company has on its balance sheet. While debt alone isn&rsquo t a red flag, high debt relative to operating profit and cash on hand can be. On the other hand, plenty of cash relative to debt means a company has lots of wiggle room to invest or make acquisitions.

Venture Corp H2 profit drops 8.1%
VENTURE Corporation on Friday posted a net profit of S$166.8 million for the six months ended Dec 31, 2020, down 8.1 per cent from S$181.5 million in H2 2019.
 
Revenue decreased 8.6 per cent to S$1.65 billion from S$1.8 billion, as the electronics manufacturing services firm worked to overcome pandemic-related disruptions to global supply chains and factory lockdowns.
 
Venture noted that H2 revenue showed a 20.6 per cent improvement compared to H1. This was " a demonstration of Venture' s resilience, competency and resourcefulness" despite challenges posed by the pandemic, it said.
 
Earnings per share was 57.6 Singapore cents, compared to 62.9 cents in the corresponding period of the previous year.
 
For the full year, net profit fell 18.1 per cent to S$297.3 million from S$363.1 million. Revenue was down 17.1 per cent to S$3 billion from S$3.6 billion.
 
Earnings per share for the full year was 102.8 Singapore cents, down from 126 Singapore cents a year ago.
 
The company intends to scale up its photonics, networking and communications, and advanced semiconductor-related equipment segments to capture opportunities in the electric vehicle industry and the domains of robotics, automation and artificial intelligence.
 
Venture Corp proposed a final cash dividend of 50 Singapore cents per share to be paid out on May 25. Including an interim dividend of 25 Singapore cents per share paid out earlier, total dividends for FY2020 would amount to 75 Singapore cents per share.
 
In FY2019, the company paid out total dividends of 70 Singapore cents per share.

The billings figure is 13.4 percent higher than the final December 2020 billings of $2.68 billion and is 29.9 percent higher than the January 2020 billings level of $2.34 billion.

&ldquo January billings of North America-based semiconductor equipment manufacturers marked a historic monthly high for the industry and a great start to the year,&rdquo said Ajit Manocha, SEMI president and CEO. &ldquo The acceleration of digital transformation is fueling strong, durable demand for semiconductor equipment.&rdquo
The SEMI Billings report uses three-month moving averages of worldwide billings for North American-based semiconductor equipment manufacturers. Billings figures are in millions of U.S. dollars.

  • The Manufacturing Sector was an important contributor to the Singapore economy in 2020, with advanced estimates that the Sector grew 7.1% in 2020, rebounding from a 1.4% decline in 2019. The SIPMM Purchasing Managing Index (" PMI" ) rose 0.2 points to 50.7 in January, with seven straight months of expansion.
     
  • Singapore' s 30 most traded stocks with manufacturing-related activities maintain a combined market capitalisation of S$127 billion, and so far in 2021 have seen S$353 million in average daily turnover.  These 30 stocks have averaged a 29% YTD gain, with a less skewed median gain of 16%.
