Tokyo Electric, or Tepco, has collected nearly 1.2m tonnes of contaminated water from the cooling pipes used to keep fuel cores from melting since the plant was crippled by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011. The water is stored in huge tanks that crowd the site.

Fish caught in waters near the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant have been detected 124 times highly radioactive than the accepted limit, a report by the Asahi Shimbun said.

The Fisheries Research Agency, a Japanese govt-affiliated research institute, revealed over the weekend that a fish called black sea bream caught at the mouth of Niidagawa river in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture contained 12,400 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium. It was way 124 times over the safety standards for foodstuffs.

The fish was caught Nov 17 at 37 kilometres south of the power plant. Close to 40 pieces of black sea bream were caught at that time. This particular type of fish is no longer sold at fish markets in the radiation affected region.

Two other fishes contained radiation levels, 426 becquerels per kilogram and 197 becquerels per kilogram.

Authorities from the Fisheries Research Agency said it will undertake further studies to establish when exactly were the fishes got stained by the high levels of radioactive cesium.

I'm not saying that it is great, I mean there will be some risk to these people, and particularly the risk is from ingestion of radionuclide particles and not so much from the dilute stuff, the stuff that is in solution.

The main risk will be to the people of Japan, and it'll be people who live along the coastline of Eastern Japan who will be greatly at risk," he said.

Mr Busby said mortality statistics will greatly change in Northern Japan, noting there might arise 400-800 extra cancers in Japan in the next 50-years.

So I think this is just going to get worse. I think we are going to see a major effect on the general health of the Japanese population in Northern Japan.

There's going to be a decrease in the birth rate and an increase in the death rate," he said

The build-up of contaminated water at Fukushima has been a sticking point in the clean-up, which is likely to last decades, especially as the  Olympics are due to be held in Tokyo  this year with some events less than 60km (35 miles) from the wrecked plant.

Neighbouring  South Korea  has retained a ban on imports of seafood from Japan&rsquo s Fukushima region imposed after the nuclear disaster and summoned a senior Japanese embassy official last year to explain how the Fukushima water would be dealt with. Its athletes are planning to bring their own radiation detectors and food to the Games.

Shocking new report: Underestimated Fukushima' s triple meltdown on risk of cancer in exposed populations, not just Japan, but arguably the whole world. 

A new report from Fairewinds Energy Education (FEE), " Cancer on the Rise in Post-Fukushima Japan," reveals that the ongoing multi-core nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi plant that started in March 2011 has produced approximately 230 times higher than normal thyroid cancers in Fukushima Prefecture, and could result in as many as one million more cancers in Japan' s future as a result of the meltdown.

According to the new report, data provided by a group of esteemed Japanese medical professionals and TEPCO, confirm a direct link of numerous cancers in Japan to the triple meltdown. As transcribed by Enenews.com, Arnie Gundersen, chief engineer at Fairewinds stated,

" It' s been almost 5 years from the Fukushima Daiichi meltdowns, and the news from Japan is still not good.

Two reports recently released in Japan, one by Japanese medical professionals and the second from Tokyo Power Corporation &ndash TEPCO &ndash acknowledged that there will be numerous cancers in Japan, much greater than normal, due to the radioactive discharges from the triple meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi...
