17 plotted to set up Isis state, says top cop ? Bernama. The Malaysian Insider
Abducting VIPs, storming strategic locations and setting up an Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) regime in Malaysia ? these were among the plots uncovered after the arrest of 17 suspects last Sunday, according to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar. He said the Isis militants of had picked strategic locations in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya as the targets of their planned attacks. The suspects were picked up in an operation conducted by the Counter-Terrorism Division of the Special Branch around Kuala Lumpur and Kedah as they held clandestine meetings. "The suspects were between the ages of 14 and 49, and among them were former senior members of the outlawed Kumpulan Militan Malaysia (KMM) or Militant Group of Malaysia who had been arrested before, religious teachers, security guards and military personnel." Khalid said the most senior member of the group of suspected terrorists was a 49-year-old former KMM member who was arrested in June 2001 under the now-defunct Internal Security Act. ? Malaysia on Wednesday implemented a six% consumption tax aimed at plugging a leaky tax-collection system and addressing a widening fiscal deficit.
The govt and economists say Goods and Services Tax (GST) will help address an inadequate revenue-collection system under which income tax is currently paid by only an estimated 11% of registered companies and 14.8% of employees. The GST has prompted demonstrations by opposition parties, who say consumers were being left with the bill for govt mismanagement of the economy. Prime Minister Najib Razak on Monday said the GST -- which does not apply to staple food items such as rice, sugar and cooking oil, as well as some medicines -- would not overburden consumers. "At the same time, we will raise the nation's revenue, and this is for the people's good," he was quoted as saying by Malaysian media. The government says the GST will raise an estimated 22 billion ringgit ($6 billion) in additional revenue each year. It hopes to trim its fiscal deficit to 3.2% of GDP in 2015, compared to 3.5% last year. An earlier 2015 target of 3.0% was scrapped in the wake of the global oil price rout that set in last year. Malaysia is a net oil exporter, and a 60% drop in crude prices in the latter half of 2014 prompted the World Bank in January to shave its 2015 GDP growth forecast for Malaysia to 4.7% from an earlier 4.9%. The ringgit currency has also plummeted on oil-linked concerns, as well as investor fears for the stability of a troubled govt investment fund, 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), which is mired debt. |

Termination letters for 6,000 Malaysia Airlines staff on June 1 - Friday, 20 March 2015.
KL: 6,000 employees to be axed and offer letters to Malaysia Airlines (MAS) employees to join the new airline are expected to come out on June 1 instead of this month, sources said. Employees will be given 3-mths notice and last day for their employment under the existing airline will be August 31. The migration from existing airline to new airline, MAB Airlines Bhd (MAB) will be delayed to Sept 1 instead of July 1. MAS under its restructuring scheme is supposed to axe 6,000 employees as part of Khazanah Nasional Bhd 12-point strategy to remake MAS. Initial plan was for MAS to issue letters this mth and the new airline will take over the operations of MAS on July 1. |

Dr Mahathir today questions and joined the chorus of voices asking Malaysia Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to explain his family's outsized wealth, following claims that the money was from family inheritance. The former prime minister said this was what the people wanted to know after Najib's stepson, Riza Aziz, burst into the Hollywood scene as co-producer for the Oscar-nominated "Wolf of Wall Street" movie, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, two years ago. "The movie did not rake in any profits. It is impossible that the money made from the movie was used to purchase luxury properties worth millions of US dollars," Mahathir said. "The question is, if the money had not come from Tun Razak's family, then where did such a large amount come from? Is it from a business? If yes, what business, where? Has the income tax been paid? To which govt?" Riza had raised eyebrows with a series of property purchases despite his previous job as a junior banker in London. |
